We are the engineers of possible: Love of Music and Electronics Leads to Software Testing

Domhnall Kearney has more than two decades of experience with a variety of small and large tech companies as a test technician and assembler. And as his career has grown year by year, he has found himself even more drawn to the intricacies and nuances of software testing. It’s this growth mindset and natural curiosity that has served him well in his last three years with BD at the Research Center Ireland (RCI) site.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering – with honors – from the Technological University Dublin in 2019, he applied for the Graduate Program at RCI. Domhnall says his love of music and the amplification of it through electronics is a core source of his attraction to software testing and engineering.

“I was brought onboard to BD as part of a cohort of 10 associates to work on software testing. I really enjoy music and I’ve always been interested in how to amplify sound through electronics, so I knew I wanted to work in some capacity in this space. It’s been such a rewarding and motivating area to work in….new product features, new releases, and having the chance to work with other teams and groups at the Sparks (Baltimore, MD) Site. I’ve definitely been pushed outside of my comfort zone when it comes to learning and growth,” explained Domhnall.

RCI Culture is Open, Friendly, Supportive

When Domhnall is asked about the culture and environment at RCI, he responds quickly noting: “It’s very open, collaborative, collegial. People here truly enjoy working with each other and helping each other be great. There is great camaraderie with not just work but enjoying time with each other through sports and social activities too. Everyone here is approachable.”

Advice for Others Considering BD?

Looking back on his time with BD, the advice Domhnall would give to others thinking about applying for a role or considering software testing as a career pivot is pretty simple: take that leap of faith.

“There’s never been a time when I could not find someone to ask questions about a project or help me get up to speed on a certain testing aspect. And one of the real positives about working at BD is you also can immerse yourself in stretch assignments and level up your skillset. The longer I am here, the better I understand how the work I do contributes to the success of the customer and end patient, which is powerful,” said Domhnall.

Attributes for Success at BD

In thinking about what an individual needs to succeed at BD, Domhnall explains that hard work, staying focused on the work in front of you, and networking to learn about other roles and other areas of the business are important.

“You need all these things, but also, embracing a continuous learning mindset as well. The more you know, the more you can contribute to the business. I love the autonomy I have at BD, but also the assurance that I have the support needed if I need it. Joining BD has been a great career move for me,” concluded Domhnall.
