We are the makers of possible: From Manufacturing to Regulatory Affairs

Jackie Ramsay will celebrate 38 years with BD in 2023.

The Utah-based Regulatory Affairs Specialist explains that her job is to work with the engineers, product teams, marketing, and other groups within the organization to make sure the medical technology brought to market is safe and effective for patients. She enjoys her role at the organization and explains that her career path has varied during her nearly four decades with BD.

“I started on the manufacturing floor in 1986 and then moved over to R&D, and then went on to work in Quality, and in the last 30 years, Regulatory Affairs. BD is a place where as long as you put in the effort, this company will provide you with career growth and opportunities,” said Jackie.

Typical Day in Regulatory Affairs

While no two days are the same, Jackie said that in addition to managing the regulatory life cycle of specific products within the Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) Advanced Access Devices (AAD) business unit, she is constantly collaborating with other teams and groups within BD, including those working in other parts of the world.  She is also responsible for product documentation and registration, so she has to understand how each product works and how it’s manufactured.

“In order to provide accurate documentation for each product, you really have to know them inside and out, which is really interesting because we have so many products across BD,” explained Jackie. Some of the products that fall into the AAD business include the PowerGlide ProTM Midline Catheter,  PowerLocTM Safety Infusion Set, and PowerPICCTM Catheter, among many others.

Diversity, Strong Support and Advice

When describing BD in one word, Jackie said diversity comes to mind. “Not only is our product portfolio very diversified, but those who work here as well, which is great, and I think leads to enhanced products and solutions for our patients.”

Jackie also notes that she feels a strong sense of support and belonging at BD, which she attributes to the dedication and commitment that senior leaders demonstrate in everyday interactions with herself and the team.  “Our leadership team is fantastic. I’ve always felt very supported in my role with BD because our leaders are so dedicated to helping you learn and grow. It’s incredible.”

When reflecting on what advice she would give someone considering BD as their next career choice, she comments quickly: “It’s a great organization. If you are right out of college, BD takes time to help train you and develop you, which is great. The pay is competitive here and there are so many opportunities to learn new skills and develop into additional roles the longer you stay with the company, which is wonderful,” said Jackie.

When not working, Jackie and her family like to get outside as much as possible to camp and fish. With three grown children, she said being outdoors is something they still like to do when they get the opportunity to get together.

“We’ve always been a big camping family. We enjoy fishing too. It’s great when you can step away from your day-to-day schedule and enjoy the freedom of the outdoors,” concluded Jackie.
