We are the makers of possible: Working as a United Front in Sales
Melanie Melvin is a people person. She loves helping others – especially through her role as a Regional Sales Specialist representing the Medical Delivery Solutions Business (MDS) for BD in the Midwest.
Growing up, she had thoughts of becoming a pediatrician because like many people may think – in order to truly impact patient care, you have to be a doctor, nurse, or another front-line worker. But Melvin said she was able to dispel that myth through her position helping healthcare professionals become further educated on peripheral IV catheters and how to employ them properly.
“When I was little, I would dress up as a doctor nearly every Halloween. As I got older, and while attending the University of Missouri-Columbia where my major was health sciences, my mentor said she thought I’d do well in medical sales,” Melvin explained. “I joined BD from the Bard acquisition and jumped right into training for my role in sales, which BD does a fantastic job in preparing you for your career.”
Supporting the continuum of care
In addition to robust training, Melvin cites the ability to meet and connect with so many new people – both internally at BD and externally – in her daily activities.
“I get energized by meeting new healthcare professionals, along with BD associates and leaders too. My involvement in the African American BD ARG (AABD ARG) has been a terrific experience. I love hearing stories from both my customers and colleagues about helping each other, it really gets me pumped up and motivated,” Melvin said.
Associate Resource Groups (ARGs) help BD advance its cultural priorities of becoming agile and results-driven, customer-centric and innovative, and inclusive and diverse. ARGs also create professional development opportunities for associates through peer mentoring, coaching, leadership, and networking opportunities.
Purpose is at the center of the BD Way. It’s the glue that unites us. It gives our work meaning. It provides focus and inspiration to work together, to roll up our sleeves, and to do everything in our power in advancing the world of health™. It has enabled us to establish ourselves as the backbone of healthcare on which many health systems depend and something that genuinely resonates with Melvin.
BD offers a United Front
When asked to describe BD in two words, Melvin quickly points to describing working here as a “united front.”
“I offer these two words because of the sheer level of teamwork at BD. Everything works off the value of ‘helping each other be great’ – even those in the non-sales space support us,” Melvin emphasized. “You always have someone in your corner to lend a hand if you need help here, which is really critical because it takes all of us working together cohesively to support our customers and in the end, positively impact patient care. I love what I do and I love working at BD.”
