Job Description Summary

BD Diagnostic Systems is seeking a Scientist I to join our R&D Microbiology ID/AST team. In this role, you will play a key part in shaping the future of clinical diagnostics by contributing to the design, development, integration and validation of assays on automated systems. You’ll work on industry-leading platforms, helping to transform how laboratories deliver patient care.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts bench experiments following established protocols, including culturing pathogenic bacteria and fungi, handling blood products, and performing routine microbiological assays such as isolation, identification, and susceptibility testing to meet customer needs.

  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment including incubators, autoclaves, and microscopes while ensuring proper documentation of experimental results both orally and in writing.

  • Maintains detailed records of laboratory activities, observations, and outcomes while collaborating with R&D and cross-functional teams on projects, platform support, and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Ensures strict adherence to laboratory safety protocols, biosafety guidelines, and regulatory standards (FDA, ISO, CLIA), including proper handling of biohazardous materials, use of PPE, and documentation to support audits.

  • Stays current with advancements in microbiology and related technologies through active participation in required training sessions and workshops.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, Medical Technology, or a related field (required).

  • Strong laboratory skills, particularly aseptic techniques, micro-pipetting, handling pathogenic organisms, and specimens, including blood.

  • Proficiency with standard computer software tools (e.g. Excel, Word, databases).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Solid understanding of microbiology principles and laboratory practices.

  • Proficiency with standard computer software tools (e.g. Excel, Word, databases).

Preferred Requirements:

  • Minimum of two years of microbiology experience preferred, but not required

  • Experience with BD Phoenix™, related products and other ID/AST methods is a plus.

  • Prior experience in product testing or validation studies is a plus.
