Senior Director Engineering, Facilities and EHS

Job Description Summary

Operations leadership position responsible for leading, coaching and mentoring engineering teams with expertise in automation, molding and packaging for IDS’ world-wide manufacturing operations. Engineering teams are responsible for new product manufacturing equipment/process development and transfer to operations, development and execution of engineering initiatives supporting business strategy and goals, operational excellence and efficiency initiatives to support the manufacture of highest quality products for IDS’ world-wide customer base. Position is responsible for strategy, performance and management of the support operations and environmental health and safety (EH&S) function for the IDS Business Unit (BU).

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for development and implementation of engineering strategy associated with project, sustaining, and advanced engineering programs to support IDS’ 17 manufacturing plants and operations world-wide.
  • Responsible for execution of strategic and operational engineering initiatives associated with product line transfers, new plant start-ups/expansions, outsourcing initiatives and acquisitions. Collaborates with plant managers and demand planning organization on plant capacity, throughput, efficiency, and implementation schedules for future manufacturing system installations, or modification/upgrade/maintenance/validation of the same.
  • Accountable for engineering team’s process excellence leading to specification, design, prototype, procurement, start-up, integration, validation, optimization and follow-up maintenance for new manufacturing equipment and processes. Leverages technology and best practices across multiple manufacturing plants and product platforms.  Coaches team members through implementation of design or process elements requiring new technologies.  Collaborates with BD corporate sourcing teams, equipment suppliers and system integrators to procure, install, debug, start-up and optimize new equipment or manufacturing systems.  
  • Leads engineering communication on a world-wide basis.  Facilitates process standardization and transfer of engineering best practices across IDS’ operations locations.
  • Participates in due diligence activities associated with business acquisitions and divestitures. Leads manufacturing technology competitive intelligence activities.
  • Collaborates with research and development teams on new product development programs.  Senses and identifies new technologies for application to new products, product or process improvements and innovations.  Drives manufacturing technology and technology development best practices via benchmarking, collaborating with BDX manufacturing technology innovation teams as well as educational and research institutions external to BD.  Transfers technology innovations to engineering team members via active associate training and development programs.
  • Accountable for driving continuous improvement (CI) elements within the engineering organization related to design, configuration, maintenance and optimization projects for existing manufacturing equipment and processes.
  • Responsible for management and direction of financial elements, including department expense budgets and finances involved for major equipment purchases and/or equipment life extension projects.  Participates in development of annual capital budget for IDS.  Reviews and recommends approval of capital requests as part of IDS’ capital management team for an annual capital budget in excess of $200M.
  • Effectively implements all aspects of people and organizational development including organizational design and staffing, associate development, performance and compensation management.  Continuously monitors, builds and leverages the appropriate allocation of a skilled and diverse engineering resource base across multiple plants and projects.  Ensures team’s focus on internal and external customer experience and their needs. 
  • Leads strategy, execution and management of support operations for IDS.  Support operations include EH&S, security and business continuity, facility management and construction, sustainability and energy management.   Aligns strategies and programs with BD’s corporate programs and initiatives.  Maintains facility and equipment compliance with all applicable local, state, federal and national codes, licenses and permits consistent with BD Corporate directives for cGMP, FDA, ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 procedures, documents and standards.  

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Solid knowledge of basic engineering fundamentals and application of these fundamentals to manufacturing automation, molding and packaging for medical products. Must have strong technical, analytical, problem solving, and decision making skills with the demonstrated ability to serve/satisfy multiple customers for the engineering services provided.
  • Must have broad engineering and project management experience base covering electrical, software, mechanical, molding, packaging, validation, and maintenance engineering. 
  • Must have significant practical work experience (15+ years), with progressive accomplishments in the area of establishing/developing/maintaining manufacturing engineering organizations and manufacturing systems within the Diagnostics or Pharmaceutical industry.  Experience with the manufacture of chemical and biological based media and reagent components preferred.
  • Must have a demonstrated track record of product or technology transfer of IVD or pharmaceutical products and/or processes as required to meet business objectives.
  • Must have demonstrated the ability to select, motivate, develop, and manage multi-disciplined engineering personnel.  Must be knowledgeable of all aspects of HR management practices for engineering professionals.  Capable of developing and maintaining a broadly skilled, effective, diverse and proactive manufacturing engineering organization aligned with business and organizational objectives.
  • Must be capable of selecting or guiding selection of contract, consultant, or other professional resources to augment an existing resource pool when necessary to provide skills/capabilities to accomplish business objectives and goals.
  • Must be familiar with related regulatory environment such as GMP’s, ISO requirements, the IVD Directive, CE marking. Must have awareness of international, national and state codes associated with facility and process safety and efficacy.  Must have working knowledge associated with validation of manufacturing processes within the Life Sciences or Medical Devices industries.  Partners with Quality and Regulatory team leadership to develop cost and quality-effective validation plans for equipment and process start-ups and changes.
  • Must be familiar with the implementation and use of Six Sigma (DMAIC and DFSS) and LEAN principles associated with operational CI goals.

Demonstrated ability to develop cohesive relationships and influence others based on credibility, integrity and performance.  Must champion and foster a team approach and be able to communicate and work effectively with all interfacing functions including plant associates and managers, Quality and Regulatory affairs leaders, business integrators, product platform marketing leaders, R&D and senior leadership.
  • Strategically agile, anticipating and articulating a broad perspective around future business needs.  Able to translate these opportunities and needs to actionable plans. Communicates well at all business levels.  Demonstrates leadership courage by addressing problems quickly and providing relevant feedback. Demonstrates mature conflict management and takes appropriate action when necessary.  Lives and demonstrates BD values as an Operations Leadership Team member. 

Education and Experience:

  • BS degree in mechanical, electrical, or manufacturing engineering.  Graduate technical (MS) or management degree (MBA) preferred.
  • A minimum of 15 years engineering experience with at least 10 years experience in the area of manufacturing engineering or technology transfer within the IVD industry. 
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in engineering management and/or manufacturing engineering management with at least four in the IVD industry.
