Job Description Summary

Oversees all aspects of Engineering and manufacturing technology in the Columbus facility. Supports and evaluates new technologies, new product development, and major capacity capital improvement projects.

Develops and sustains cutting edge production capabilities consistent with best-cost position and product strategies, leverage engineering resources plant wide.

Monitors technical associates and promotes education and human development consistent with our goals.

Provides production capability for Columbus and other BD Medication Delivery Systems sites.

Provides direct leadership and guidance to plant engineering services, mold maintenance, tool & die shop, plant maintenance, and control specialist group.

Strategic Impact/Accountability


Responsible for the site engineering and technical structure. Strong leadership in the recruitment and hiring of all Engineers, Electrical-Mechanical-Technicians, Machine Designers, Controls and Vision designers, machinists, and mold repair technicians. Engages closely with human resource partners.

Develops strong partnerships with Universities, technical schools, and high schools to fill the talent pipeline. Leads and develops an internship program.

Responsible for the site technical talent training and skill development.

Mentors and ensures proper training for engineering personnel and operations team members in project management, capital processes, and solid engineering skills.

Project Excellence

Responsible for ensuring a solid project management field is followed. Leads the site project review process, known as PACE, to review and document project progress, and guide teams toward success. This begins with project initiation progresses into execution and completes with project closure with learning and growth of the project teams.

Lead and be accountable for capacity growth, continuous improvement programs and new process development activities related to manufacturing.

Coordinates and prioritizes the technical support requested from the PosiFlush, Hypodermic and Cannula businesses on the engineering personnel.

Balances/prioritizes technical resources workload to leverage functional expertise to ensure successful execution of capacity expansion and strategically critical projects.

Drives technology innovation and technology decisions to promote Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost

The incumbent will protect the Intellectual Property and Trade Secrets at the site,


Responsible for the capital budget, forecasting, processes, and performance.

Ensures project leaders understand the financial impact of projects and are engaged closely with finance partners.

Ensures the site facility is in phenomenal condition to produce medical products, and the facility is continuously improved for Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost.

Ensures the site complies with: all local, state, federal, and BD safety, health and environmental regulations, policies, procedures; all local BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through consistent application of sound quality assurance principles.

Financial Impact

Decision making affects millions of dollars of capital investment both directly and indirectly. Typical investment may exceed $30 million annually in the site.

Provides leadership to achieve $10-12 million in cost improvement annually.

Technical Area of Expertise/Sphere of Influence

Demonstrates an expertise, knowledge, and advanced education in manufacturing.

Supports/Influences the manufacturing operations across the Columbus site, and other sites with similar operations. Ensures collaboration and sharing across sites.

Works with Manufacturing Technology Innovation (MTI) engineers to develop and implement processes for new production and scale-up programs.

Reviews and influences technical activities related to the development of new processes and materials by interfacing with personnel from MTI, R&D, product designers, product development, quality, production, assembly, and packaging technology.

Specify equipment, tooling and fixtures for new processes, or existing process changes. Review for similarities at existing facilities and low-cost options.

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related Engineering field with a minimum of eight (8) years of engineering leadership experience.
  • The leadership experience should be in various engineering fields relating to R&D, manufacturing, quality control, and equipment design and process development.
  • Direct Reports will include 3-5 Engineers and Leaders, and 3-10 Technicians.
  • Influences the entire sites' engineering and technical resources.
