Job Description Summary

Support and lead all aspects of Engineering and Manufacturing Technology in the Columbus facility. Evaluate and drive new technologies, new processes, and new product development projects. Develops and sustains cutting edge research and technical capabilities consistent with best-cost position and product strategies, leverage engineering resources plant wide.
Mentor technical associates and promotes education and human development consistent with our goals. Provides technical capability for Columbus and other BD Medication and Diagnostic Systems Cannula Plants.

Strategic Impact/Accountability

  • Lead and be accountable for worldwide cannula capacity growth, continuous improvement programs and new process development activities related to cannula manufacturing. Includes:
  • Supports prioritized needs from the WW cannula businesses working with cannula engineering personnel.  Balances/prioritizes cannula technical resources and demonstrate functional expertise to insure successful execution of capacity expansion and strategically critical projects.
  • Drives technology innovation and technology decisions to promote Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost
  • Guide and mentor engineering team and operations team members
  • Drives the worldwide sharing of cannula standard methodologies, protection of IP, and standardization
  • Assessing and determining technologies.   Write capital expenditure requests for equipment, tooling and fixtures, as needed. 
  • Support new process and product development. Responsible for documentation and training.  Lead Projects as assigned.

Sphere of Influence (liaison)

  • Supports/Influences the WW cannula operations across multiple manufacturing sites. Coordinate and communicate assigned projects and their status with the appropriate personnel and departments.  Develop and implement processes for new production and scale-up programs.  Coordinate technicians and engineers as required completing assigned projects.
  • Worldwide responsibilities require travel at an approximate 30% rate.
  • Sites influenced: Columbus, Tuas, Juiz, San Luis Potosi, Dominican Republic and Mannford.
  • Work with and demonstrate Materials Labs in Columbus, Franklin Lakes, NJ and BD-Technology, NC.
  • Build relationship with external analytical labs and university relationship for research and development like Colorado School of Mines.

Technical Area of Expertise

  • Demonstrates an expertise and advanced education in stainless steel manufacturing. Lead technical activities related to the development of new processes and materials by interfacing with personnel from facilities, water systems, R&D, technology, product design, product development, quality, production, and manufacturing and assembly. 
  • Specify equipment, tooling and fixtures for new processes, or existing process changes.  Review for similarities at existing facilities and low cost options.  Identify, assess and manage Global Low cost equipment and process suppliers. 
  • Maintain network and capital approvals for manufacturing sites.  Monitor new technologies and innovations in cannula manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated ability in advanced design of experiments, first principle and systems engineering drill down
  • Robust process and product design based on signal-to-noise principles and optimization incorporating noise DOE studies.
  • Knowledge experience in advanced problem-solving techniques, including Kepner Tregoe Methodology.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct technical literature research to develop innovative solutions in manufacturing technology and meet and exceed customer needs.
  • Experience material characterization and analysis, including proficiency in SEM/EDX. Proficiency in metallurgical science of stainless steel would be preferred.

Degree of Accountability

  • High level of accountability based on level of decision making, oversees and accountable for key growth and continuous improvement of WW cannula manufacturing operations.
  • Provides guidance and facilitates engineering resource performance and results.  Provides leadership and creativity around solving problems.  Generally able to identify solutions to problems encountered without assistance and develops and secures resource planning.  Completes performance reviews for direct reports.
  • Direct Reports will include 1-5 Project Engineers or Technicians.

Financial Impact

  • Decision making affects millions of dollars of capital investment both directly and indirectly.  Typical investment may exceed $1mm—$10mm annually in plant and equipment being implemented by capital project teams.
  • $3mm-5mm in cost improvement is expected every year.

Decision Making

  • High level—through team leadership will engage in significant decisions that will have immediate capital impacts, long range operational effectiveness and regulatory/quality impacts.

Required Skills and Knowledge

Education:

Required: MS degree in material science or metallurgy.   PhD is preferred.

Experience:

Required: A minimum of three (3) years of industrial or research experience.

Proficiency in metallurgical testing, including, stiffness and corrosion, and in measurement systems.

Proficiency and experience in statistical data analysis, problem-solving and statistical process control. Six Sigma Certification preferred. 

Proficiency in effective communication, including technical writing and presentation skills

The experience should be in various engineering fields relating to process and product development, R&D, manufacturing, quality control and equipment design.
