We are looking for a hands-on and motivated Senior R&D Engineer with an electrical background. A key objective of this role is to execute medical product innovation and development. This position requires an individual to discover and drive new electromechanical device concepts through New Product Development (NPD) process in support of the commercialization of novel bioengineering technologies. This individual should have significant experience in conceptualizing, developing, integrating, analyzing, designing and launching capital medical products. The position also requires an individual to interact regularly with physicians, nurses or patients in order to assess needs, generate concepts and uncover unmet needs within the marketplace by partnering with cross-functional teams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES including the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Uncover new product concepts and drive those product concepts into the NPD process
  • Lead key project design initiatives and successfully deliver them through the NPD process to a successful commercialization
  • Develop, prototype and test new electromechanical product systems and components
  • Identify unmet needs and industry trends through literature reviews, patent searches, and customer interactions
  • Apply a breadth of technical know-how to address unmet needs
  • Synthesize fuzzy information and converge diverse inputs into new concepts
  • Define a technical approach and design for the solution
  • Provide insights into technical feasibility and risks
  • Perform technology landscape, identify and evaluate technologies for incorporation into products
  • Generate intellectual property to support new product ideas and concepts
  • Drive hardware design such as system architecture, component selection, circuit design, testing and integration of printed circuit board assemblies into medical products
  • Assist in ensuring the QSR compliance of the design control process during product development
  • Perform, organize, plan and document design activities leading to new or improved products with urological and surgical applications

  • Knowledge of mechanical design using SolidWorks (3D)
  • Basic 2D drawing creation and modification using SolidWorks
  • Basic statistical analysis

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, advanced degree is desired
  • Minimum 5 years of electrical design experience
  • Experience in Analog and Mixed Signal design, power supply and battery management, and digital and analog PCBA Design
  • Biofluid sensing, monitoring, diagnostics, management and flow dynamics experience is desired
  • Embedded control design experience is a plus
  • Programming or data analysis skills (e.g. C, Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, Minitab) is a plus
  • Medical device development is preferred
  • Knowledgeable in system engineering, QSR, Design Control, EMC and IEC 60601 standards

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations.  Ability to write reports and business correspondence.  Ability to communicate well with individuals at all levels within (and outside) the organization. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to perform basic engineering calculations and have understanding of design of experiment.  Also requires understanding of statistical concepts.

REASONING ABILITY

This position requires good judgment.  All product and process development activities within a team are to be carried out according to the applicable laws and regulations.  When in doubt, the incumbent should source out the appropriate information via internal and external resources.

The incumbent will be a detail oriented individual with the skills to manage multiple priorities, projects and tasks all in support of corporate and divisional goals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, talk or hear.  The employee will sometimes be required to move around in manufacturing facility or meet with medical professionals in hospital environment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

No special work environment conditions other than minimal exposure to manufacturing environment (i.e. noise, minimal heat and some chemical fume exposure), laboratory, and hospital settings.
