SUMMARY

Reporting to the Site Manager, this position requires the planning, development, implementation, and coordination of the Site safety and environmental programs.  We are looking for a candidate with strong engineering principles to prevent or correct unsafe acts and ensure safe working conditions. This role will require significant interaction with the Leadership Team and all Associates.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ability to partner with the Engineering (Operations and Design), RME, Robotics, Occupational Health and safety, Operations, and other key stakeholders in safe equipment design and review equipment to ensure safety and ergonomic standards are included and maintained in the design.
  • Responsible for Environmental Health and Safety Key Performance Indicators and business metrics to Corporate EHS.
  • Perform and train on the performance of internal EHS audits and inspections in the work environments and determine preventive and corrective control measures.
  • Collaborates with site teams as it pertains to Management of Change program requirements. This includes team review and approval of all new and modified equipment.
  • Manage all aspects (technical, regulatory/third party interface, reporting, permitting, compliance, financial, administrative, etc.) of BD projects and permits in compliance with relevant regulatory programs, requirements, and BD corporate policies and standards. Ensure appropriate management of EHS on all projects and coordinate efforts of other EHS staff members on various projects as required.
  • Coordinates all training mandated by local regulatory agencies. Develops EHS training for all production, administrative personnel, and contractors.
  • Conducts/Leads OSHA process safety hazard analysis/hazard and operability studies (PHA/HAZOP) for applicable processes and any future process changes.
  • Responsible to ensure compliance to all OSHA PSM regulations for facility programs. Participate in new standard developments with Engineering, Automation, Robotics, Injury Prevention Specialists, RME, Operations, and other key stakeholders.
  • Participate in the investigation of injuries and near misses, using highly deductive methods to assist in identifying deep root causes, and coordinate the development and implementation of robust corrective and preventative actions to ensure zero repeats.
  • Participate in continuous improvement team activities and support departmental initiatives designed to improve both EHS and the business processes
  • Benchmark and utilize best-in-class/world-class measures and systems so as to continually improve the Site strategies
  • Coordinate the waste management collection and disposal process within the facility and keep essential recordkeeping organized and in compliance with regulatory requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Health, and/or Bachelor s degree in safety, engineering; Occupational Health and Safety; Industrial Engineering; Safety Management; Industrial Hygiene, or a related technical field is required.

  • Candidate must be an effective communicator both verbal and written in English and Spanish. Must be able to read and comprehend instructions in Basic English and Spanish. Must be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, internal customers, and other employees within the organization.
  • Safety Matter Expert in EHS programs and regulatory compliance.
  • Current certification from recognized EHS entities (CIH, CSP, CHMM, etc.) is highly preferred.
  • EHS leadership experience in a flammable manufacturing environment.   Advanced knowledge and training related to EPA, OSHA, safety, legal, and regulatory compliance. 
  • Experience leading PHAs and/or HAZOPs and conducting EHS Project Reviews
  • Proficient in OSHA, EPA Regulations, Building and Fire Codes; experience preparing and submitting environmental permits and forms.
  • Minimum of 5 or more years of experience in environmental, industrial hygiene and safety in a flammable manufacturing environment with working knowledge of OSHA, FDA, DOT, and EPA regulations in a flammable manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge in the following: NFPA 30 Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, NFPA 58 Liquefied Petroleum Gas, NFPA 70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 497 Classification of Flammable Liquids, Gases, or Vapors and of Hazardous (Classified) Locations for Electrical Installations in Chemical Process Areas
  • 5 or more years of industry based EHS auditing and corrective action coordination, managing projects; including the directing of vendors and/or contractors
  • Pharmaceutical or Chemical related EH&S experience
  • Management system experience, i.e., ISO9001, ISO14001, OHSAS18001, ISO 45001, etc.
  • Documented experience with continuous improvement programs, i.e., Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, PDCA, TMS, etc.
  • Displays the desire and demonstrates the potential to increase responsibilities in EHS as site continues to grow as an organization.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as geometry, trigonometry, exponents, etc.  Ability to apply mathematical operations to tasks such as facility design, process line location and layout.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms and lift and/or move up to ten pounds.   Employee is required to meet with other personnel in other areas of building.
