Responsibilities

Job Description Summary

The Manufacturing Engineer II provides a broad level of engineering leadership and support across manufacturing operations to ensure products are produced at a high-quality level and with optimum efficiency to ensure customer satisfaction. The selected candidate will directly support introducing new manufacturing capabilities through equipment acquisition, installation and validation. Additionally, they will take responsibilities for ongoing process support through problem investigations, projects implementation and continuous improvement activities.

As the primary electrical / controls engineering resource to the site, the selected candidate will lead the Mebane site in executing manufacturing equipment enhancement projects, support sourcing and deployment of new custom automation systems and provide support for our maintenance team with high-level problem diagnostics as well as training.

Job Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As a member of the engineering and maintenance team, responsibilities include:

  • Help drive a safety focused culture through implementation of safe processes and equipment.
  • Implementation of BD Processes, which include Change Controls, Deviations, Engineering Change Orders, CAPA’s, etc.
  • Motivate others to accept process changes, sustain it and take ownership.
  • Lead by example with a hands-on approach in working with team members by demonstrating a passion for continuous improvement, effective prioritization, time management, and managing multiple tasks

As the lead manufacturing engineer responsible for one or more manufacturing systems, responsibilities include:

  • Assist operations and technical staff with solutions to problems occurring in the manufacturing process and ongoing training and technical support.  Document procedures and assist training employees who will operate the process.
  • Review and recommend Preventative and Predictive Maintenance Programs to prevent equipment failures and maximize machinery uptime.
  • Plan and lead small / medium projects including internal improvement projects focusing on design changes, process improvements, outsourcing, material cost reduction, and other plant efficiency efforts. - Ability to identify project requirements and develop schedules
  • Lead validation efforts writing and executing protocols; writing validation reports for new and existing equipment and processes.
  • Supports implementation and deployment of new manufacturing systems. 
  • Develop machine output capability, including throughput and repetitiveness regarding meeting / holding specification tolerances, machine process capability.
  • Identify and implement changes to working methods or operation sequences that will minimize risks, costs, and waste; increase yields and productivity; and improve the quality and consistency of final products.
  • Develop operating procedures, acceptance test and validation test plans and protocols. 
  • Collect and analyze performance data from equipment and automated processes to evaluate plant performance.

As the primary electrical / controls engineering resource to the site, responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for development, improvement, and maintenance of electrical and controls sub-systems for automation within the Media production plant(s)
  • Developing and communicating specifications for electrical controls, automation hardware, software components and systems. 
  • Design, develop, upgrade, and debug sequence control logic, PLC programs, electrical control sub-systems. 
  • Participate in guiding and developing activities for factory automation through development of automation standards and plant-specific software and database applications
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software components and sub-systems.

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with MS Office software.
  • Detail oriented with excellent analytical skills. 
  • Excellent communication skills, proven ability to work within a team environment and ability to prioritize responsibilities.
  • Experience working in a high volume, automated manufacturing environment
  • Experience working in an FDA regulated environment, preferably Medical Device
  • Thorough knowledge and experience in programming PLCs (with strong preference for Rockwell / Allen Bradley), HMI’s, sequence logic design, PID loop design /implementation.
  • Specification, design, installation, and troubleshooting of a variety of AC/DC motors, controls, instrumentation and sensors for automated systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

Skills and experience with any of these additional qualifications will be beneficial to success in the role

  • Experience coordinating equipment vendors, writing equipment specifications and operating procedures.
  • Machine design experience including relevant proficiency with CAD systems (Solid Works, Inventor, AutoCAD, etc.)
  • Experience with programming and developing vision system applications (Cognex, Keyence, etc.)
  • Experience in equipment acceptance and validation testing, including protocol development, conducting tests, and data interpretation.
  • Six Sigma training / certification and/or LEAN training.
  • Experience with application of manufacturing execution system (MES) and supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering 
  • 3-7 years relevant industrial experience and/or combination of post-BS education and experience required.
