Production Manager

The Production Manager is responsible for the leadership and direction of manufacturing for the Mebane, NC plant. This role will develop and implement methods of manufacturing, procedures and processes that result in improved safety, quality, delivery, cost and employee engagement. This position coordinates the utilization of direct manufacturing, labelling, packaging, material handling and training resources to ensure plant goals are accomplished and are in alignment with business objectives. Accountable for safety, team skills development, staffing, product quality, production execution, efficiency improvement and financial performance, driving continuous improvement initiatives. The position requires availability for occasional night shift presence.

Job Description

This position coordinates the utilization of direct manufacturing, labelling, packaging, material handling and training resources to ensure plant goals are accomplished and are in alignment with business objectives.  Accountable for safety, team skills development, staffing, product quality, production execution, efficiency improvement and financial performance, driving continuous improvement initiatives. The position requires availability for occasional night shift presence.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

  • Plan and direct production activities across all shifts and establish manufacturing priorities to maintain quality, cost, and customer service within a safe working environment.
  • Build a strong team, provide coaching, manage performance, reward and celebrate achievements
  • Make routine rounds of the facility to ensure production standards are maintained. Help identify problem areas and implement changes to improve performance.
  • Provide access to the tools and training for work teams to perform their activities effectively and efficiently.
  • Partner with other functions to investigate and eliminate root cause of process variations and non-conformances, promoting the use of improvement tools.
  • Develop, implement, maintain and improve manufacturing operating procedures, driving change control and SAP related approvals and activities.
  • Assure that all employees follow established occupational safety rules, housekeeping, Hazmat regulations, and SOPs.
  • Foster a Culture of Quality to ensure customer and regulatory requirements are primary drivers in business decisions.
  • Establish a collaborative working environment that fosters accountability.
  • Communicates to the team on the state of the business, performance and goals.
  • Develops and implements recognition, training, performance appraisal and accountability systems.
  • Develops and manages budget performance for areas of responsibility.

JOB DIMENSIONS:

  • Must demonstrate excellent communication skills, fluency in interpreting and modeling BD Values, Leadership Competences and Cultural Priorities.
  • Ability to seek input from others, relinquish control, and anticipate customer needs.
  • Works closely with Supply Chain, Quality, Engineering/Maintenance, Product Support and Regulatory Affairs.
  • Work content requires independent thought and execution with little supervision.
  • Success depends on the ability to work effectively in a highly cross-functional, matrix environment, leveraging the knowledge of functional experts within BD.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, management, or a technical field
  • Eight or more years of experience in technical and/or management roles
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in Manufacturing. Ability to interface with all levels of the organization.
  • Previous experience in an FDA-regulated (cGMP) industry
  • Expertise in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write English fluently
  • Must be able to build teams and provide coaching.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, TPM, Six Sigma
  • Experience with SAP system – MRP, Production Order and Quality transactions
  • Knowledge and experience with Quality Systems - BD’s or equivalent

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Will supervise both individual contributors and supervisors.
  • Will manage operations across multiple shifts
  • Will be a member of the plant’s ESC (Executive Steering Committee)
