BD VAD (Vascular Access Devices), the leader in the Vascular Access Market, is looking for an exceptional Engineering Leader to join our Sustaining R&D team. The successful candidate will be in a leadership role, leading all of sustaining for VAD.  The areas of responsible include: Advanced Peripherals, Central Lines, Peripherally Inserted Venous Catheters, and Vascular Access Technologies.  Close collaboration with our new product development teams will be necessary to maintain alignment and achieve success.

The candidate will lead a multi-disciplinary team supporting medical device products to improve the lives of patients worldwide. In particular, the Associate Director will lead R&D sustaining engineering teams in the support of medical device products including, for example, manufacturing, material, supplier, quality, and regulatory issues, and other challenges covering many of BD’s product lines.

 This position is responsible for the management of division activities related to multiple product development groups, including product development, cost improvement, manufacturing support, sustaining engineering, shared service groups and compliance to divisional regulatory requirements.

The successful candidate is expected to bring deep knowledge of medical devices, good engineering practices, control systems and change control, regulatory and standards requirements, project management, and strong people management skills. Since the position will bridge cross-functional groups, applied experience in Medical Device regulations, control systems, manufacturing, as well as medical device development is key. This position will also oversee changes, improvements, updates, corrections, and testing of various medical device platforms.

The successful candidate will be a proven project and people leader with excellent communication skills. He/she will interact directly with both internal and external stakeholders including senior collaborators/partners whether they be Academic, Industrial, Government, or NGO. Other responsibilities include collaborating with engineers, developers, QA, regulatory, manufacturing, and marketing functions for the successful execution of technology and product improvement programs. The ability to work cross-functionally and with multi-disciplinary teams is essential.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead multi-disciplinary technical projects and ensure timely completion of milestones.
  • Work with department Directors, external stakeholders, and business R&D leaders to plan projects, develop budgets, and define deliverables and timelines.
  • Interface with outside collaborators to define projects and ensure successful completion of deliverable.
  • Provide clear and timely communications, including written reports, oral presentations, and status updates to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Organizes and coordinates all activity related to two or more R&D Service groups and/or product development groups.
  • Performs managerial responsibilities for assigned team members, which may include performance reviews, selection, promotion and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Works with Technology Teams in support of division R&D goals, as well as sustaining engineering responsibilities related to existing product lines.
  • Creates tracks and meets project schedules and budgets.
  • Implements department and division procedures and policies relating to all aspects of the product development groups and technology teams.
  • Assesses priorities and makes assignments to assure project and company priorities are met.
  • Assures compliance with corporate and divisional procedures, policies and government regulations.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Ability to come up to speed quickly in new spaces, especially those outside current area of expertise.

Excellent problem-solving skills required.

Prior experience in development of medical device technologies and products.

Expert knowledge of good engineering practices including design for six sigma and medical device design control.

Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Experience as a leader of project teams with relevant commercial industry experience.

Ability to mentor and develop other associates.

Ability to concurrently handle a variety of projects and coordinate the efforts of cross-functional team members.

Ability to independently work with and manage in-house and outside suppliers, contractors and consultants.

Ability to independently work with outside medical and technical professionals.

Skills in communicating with all levels of technical and operating management (both written and oral presentation skills).

Ability to analyze and use technical data and resources.

Leadership, decision making, and project management skills.

Ability to understand all dimensions of internal/external customer requirements.

Knowledge of Business Management skills in the areas of finance, capitalization, business planning, regulatory and product development.

Organizational agility to deal with the unforeseen challenges.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field plus ten years experience in the medical device or closely related industry.

Good working knowledge of design controls, development, manufacturing, finance, administration and some knowledge of clinical requirements for medical devices.

Demonstrated positive communication and human relation skills.

Successfully and directly managing a team of 6 or more.

Successful experience managing a budget.
