GENERAL FUNCTION:

The CAE Staff Engineer is an essential part of BD’s Corporate Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) team and will have the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of BD’s next generation medical products and enhance the current product portfolio. Under the general direction of the Corporate CAE Analysis Manager, this Staff Engineer will use their knowledge of software tools, material models, and experimental methods to optimize the part functionality of new and existing product designs. 

The CAE Staff Engineer will provide technical leadership in the application, research, and development of advanced simulation and experimentation capabilities in the fields of structural mechanics, materials characterization, and functional product testing.  Additionally, they will provide mentorship and technical guidance to other team members in subject matter areas of expertise.  The direct impact of these efforts will be to deliver high quality products to market faster through the use of advanced simulations and experimental techniques.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical leadership for the application and development of simulation, material testing, and experimental capabilities within the BDX R&D community.  Recommend and implement the application of appropriate technologies to meet team objectives.
  • Interact independently with product development teams to develop plans for simulations and testing to support their programs. Coordinate efforts of internal and external resources to ensure timely completion of project goals and help define project direction.
  • Perform computer simulation studies for complex, non-linear structural applications utilizing Abaqus finite element analysis (FEA) software.
  • Design and develop methods, protocols, and subsequently perform product testing to support the calibration and validation of computational models.
  • Perform standardized and custom material testing in order to develop advanced material models needed to perform simulations.
  • Maintain and manage centralized CAE Materials Database used for storing material test results, material input files for simulations, and commercially available material data.
  • Utilize additional engineering tools (i.e. Matlab, HEEDS, Minitab, JMP, Bluehill, DIC Replay, etc.), in conjunction with simulation software tools and experimental data, to develop optimal solutions and obtain a more in-depth understanding of the project engineering problems.
  • Lead the research and development of advanced technologies for state-of-the art of predictive simulation tools and experimental/testing techniques.  Coordinate efforts with outside partners and internal stakeholders and recommend acquisition and development of additional tools, equipment, and capabilities. 
  • Promote the value of CAE capabilities and engineering applications to the BDX community through webinars, forums, and visits to divisional customers. 
  • Develop and maintain an environment for constructive inter-relationships among CAE team members, with business customers and among various cross-functional disciplines. 
  • Maintain state-of-the-art CAE analytical capabilities through training courses, seminars, and industry conferences.  Attend and present at worldwide industry and simulation conferences to reinforce role as subject matter expert in structural mechanics, materials characterization, and functional product testing.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, with advanced degrees preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience within the product development arena, preferably within the medical product industry.  This experience must include a combination of performing advanced finite element analyses and performing material and product testing.
  • Proven ability to work with engineering professionals at all levels and to communicate with others effectively.
  • Expert knowledge using FEM/FEA for structural mechanics analyses with non-linear (plastics and rubbers) materials. Large deformation and multi-body contact desired.
  • Expert knowledge in material and product testing, preferably with non-linear medical grade materials and products.
  • Familiarity with Instron testing equipment and associated software highly desired.
  • Familiarity with scripting, computational fluid dynamics, simulation-based optimization, and multi-physics simulations highly desired.
  • Familiarity in using 3D CAD solid modeling software packages, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Familiarity using GrantaMI would be a plus.
