BD Technologies & Innovation (BDTI) is an Enterprise R&D center supporting innovation across all BD segments and business units (BUs). The Device Innovation team at BDTI supports the Interventional and Medical segments in identifying new innovation opportunities, sourcing external technologies from universities and start-up companies, driving projects through the BD Idea/Innovation process, and in developing technologies and product concepts ready for transfer to the Global Product Development System (GPDS) within the BUs. The BDTI Device Innovation team partners with R&D, strategic marketing, clinical/medical affairs, business development, and other key functions from the BUs on innovation projects and programs. The teams follow the Stanford BioDesign process including deep ethnographic research and clinician interviews to identify and validate unmet clinical needs, and to develop robust needs statements that provide the foundation for attractive new business opportunities and innovation programs in support of such opportunities.
This position serves as a key engineering resource and participant in the BDTI Device Innovation front-end concept development in support of the Interventional and Medical segments. The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary team to generate concepts, prototype, reduce technical risk and ultimately transfer the project to the Bus. Utilizing the BioDesign process, the candidate will be part of the team to identify and validate unmet clinical needs and to define the needs criteria for the product. The candidate will utilize this needs criteria to design, prototype, and test different concepts. The candidate, as part of the Device Engineering, will apply working knowledge of design and engineering principles to support early stage concept development for the Interventional and Medical segments.
Candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team focused on early-stage concept development
Participate in research that provides clinical feedback and guidance, such as physician interface meetings and pre-clinical studies to establish design direction.
Generate new product concepts and prototypes in a practical and organized manner
Lead brainstorming sessions to develop new ideas that meet the early-stage product requirements
Document intellectual property to grow the intellectual property value of the project
Mechanical design and development to support early-stage innovation projects for multiple business units
Utilize internal and external prototyping resources to build and evaluate different concepts
Assess feasibility of long-term manufacturing methods, including assembly and injection molding (DFX/DFM)
Assembly, testing, and reporting of results of early-stage prototypes against product requirements
Material evaluation of components for transition to product development
Reduce technical risk in order to enable transfer to new product development teams
Partner with external firms to supplement internal capabilities to deliver a robust concept offering to the business units
Collaborate with a cross-functional team to ensure program success.
Qualifications and Experience:
BA/BS in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering, Master’s degree preferred
10 years of related medical device experience required
Strong analytical skills and engineering skills
Demonstrated skills for problem solving and issue handling
Experience with rapid prototyping technologies (SLA, Polyjet, Carbon, DMLS)
Expertise in using three-dimensional CAD solid modeling software packages, preferably SolidWorks
Proficient in plastic part design, injection molding and other manufacturing processes
Experience with medical device quality system requirements, design controls, documentation controls, cGMP processes
Experience with Design For Six Sigma (DFSS), statistical design of experiments, working knowledge of Minitab statistical software
Deep understanding of fixture design including basic machining considerations and developing test methods
Hands-on prototyping & device assembly experience
Hands-on machine tool experience (vertical mill, lathe, drill press, etc.)
Excellent verbal and written communication, organization, problem solving and interpersonal skills are necessary
Wide technical breadth, and ability to rapidly and seamlessly transition across topics of interest to the Interventional and Medical segments and related stakeholders
Hands-on experience with Stanford BioDesign process and methodology, especially as related to front-end needs finding/validation, and ethnographic research (Desired, not required)
Proficient with MS Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Must be able to multitask and operate effectively within a diverse work environment
