As Senior Staff Engineer you will play the role of a Technical Architect within the BD Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) Business Unit’s R&D Centers of Excellence (COE), focusing on identifying and driving next generation materials science and technologies enabling new portfolio opportunities. The position will include the whole spectrum of activities involved with opportunities, ranging from search and technical screening, to in-licensing and acquisition due diligence, to potential project/program management with the external organizations. He/she will be an inspiring leader to internal partners and the face of the organization in the designated focus area, internally and externally. The incumbent is expected to extensively use external ecosystem including academic / government labs, industry partners, incubators, accelerators while building upon capabilities across the BD network. He/she will work closely with others in R&D, Commercial, Clinical, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and Business Development Functions.

The incumbent is expected to have sufficient discernment to speak with business internal partners to understand requirements for new inorganic acquisitions or licensing. He/she is further expected to quickly develop strong market insights to bridge new emergent technologies with market needs. Candidate should be capable of taking on Project Leadership by conceiving, planning, and leading key technical development activities to bring inorganic opportunities to fruition. He/she will be part of an international, geographically dispersed team.

In this role you will be responsible for:

Working in a multi-functional environment, you will

  • Provide senior technical leadership, advanced engineering skills, and project management skills toward development and execution of technology strategy and roadmap within the designated thrust area.
  • Lead evaluation of relevant next-generation technologies and products, driven benchmarking toward assessments of internal and external business opportunities, support development of business cases and charter appropriate programs
  • Develop and execute an outreach strategy to identify high-impact external scientific innovations aligned with business strategy.
  • Build and maintain an active network in the industry and with academic scientists and key opinion leaders, set up KOL boards in critical areas, as well as with medtech, biotech and venture communities by attending partnering conferences, industry events and congresses.
  • Identify, plan, break down and solve complex and abstract problems, and leveraging your credibility to provide technical direction / guidance / mentoring to the organization.
  • Using these sophisticated technical skills, you will conceive, plan, and lead key technical development activities.
  • Prepare and present assessments and recommendations to BG and BU LT, Innovation Council, Strategic Innovation, Business Development
  • Support of R&D IP strategy and processes and participate in a work environment that prizes scientific inquiry and innovation.

To be successful in this role, you require:

  • PhD Degree (or Master’s Degree minimum) in Materials Science/Engineering, Polymer Science or closely related field
  • Minimum of 10 years experience driving technology/product development, with a portion of it focused on early stage / front end innovation.
  • Technical expertise in advanced sensors and responsive materials, strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of downstream product development execution through a track record of delivering products to market or developing commercially viable technologies
  • Solid understanding of disciplined product development processes, regulatory and quality requirements, high-volume manufacturing practices
  • Experience of coordinating multi-functional teams. Ability to work in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Deep technical curiosity, courage and commitment to advancing bold ideas that provide better options for patients and caregivers.
  • Ability to drive well-informed, fact-based decision making to drive projects and deliver timely results
  • Possess a high degree of motivation, bring an energetic approach to all engagements

Education and experience required:

  • Master’s Degree (PhD strongly preferred) in Materials Science/Engineering, Polymer Science or closely related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years experience driving technology/product development, with a portion of it focused on early stage / front end innovation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of downstream product development execution through a track record of delivering products to market or developing commercially viable technologies.
  • Solid understanding of disciplined product development processes, regulatory and quality requirements, high-volume manufacturing practices.
