Job Description Summary

The Customer Quality Relations Engineer is responsible for developing engineering, analytical and reporting capabilities to support and educate the role of the NA Customer Quality Relations organization as the single point of contact for Strategic Customers, Channel Partners and assigned customers. This position is responsible for partnering and working with business units to prioritize actions that address product performance issues impacting BD customer experience.
As assigned, this position is also responsible for representing BD Quality at an enterprise level by directing customer communications to appropriate functions, interfacing directly with customers and customer account management, in support of the customer’s Quality expectations, analysis and presentation of product and performance data and partnering with applicable business units on product issues and resolution.

Job Overview:

  • Independently applies Engineering technical expertise to provide leadership and development of analytical capabilities of the CQR organization including database capabilities and training programs.

  • Works with the NA Regional CI/Analytics Business Partner and drives development and improvement of database structure, system analytics, proactive escalation triggers and reporting capabilities for product complaints and other databases as required.

  • Appraises and leads system validation needs where required for NA Regional Quality database and analytics programs.  Ensure global procedures and standards for QE engineering activities are applied.

  • Develops and maintains in depth product and process knowledge for assigned business units. 

  • Actively partners with the BU to establish objectives for actions to drive product and process improvements/corrective actions associated with product performance issues. 

  • Learnings and updates are maintained and communicated to the CQE team.

  • Serves as a key contributor along with SCG, Channel Partner VPs, and/or Alternate Site Leaders in responding, representing, and speaking on behalf of BD quality for product performance, recalls, inquiries, engagements, and escalations in response to written communications, during virtual and/or face to face meetings.

  • Provide ongoing technical support and mentoring for the Customer Quality Executives from a quality perspective.

Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)


  • Thorough understanding of the Medical Device industry and regulations/standards: ISO 13485, 21 CFR Part 11

  • Thorough understanding of statistical methods for Quality Assurance

  • Deep knowledge of engineering and data analytics including application of appropriate methods for various engagements and escalations.

  • Consistent application of technical principles, theories, concepts, and quality sciences / tools

  • Knowledge and experience in manufacturing, project management and engineering.

  • Recognized as an expert in assigned BD products and their applications in the industry

  • Knowledge of the regulations governing the industry as they apply to the CQE role.


  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in an unsupervised environment.

  • Experience in Quality System, Six Sigma Methodology, Validation, FMEA/Risk Management.  Ability to apply six-sigma methodologies to data analysis.

  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and leadership capability.


  • BS or MS degree in quality, engineering or related discipline

  • Certifications (if applicable)

  • CQE, CQA, CQM, Six Sigma Green and/or Black Belt

Experience (in years)

  • A minimum of 8 years relevant experience or a combination of equivalent education and relevant experience
