We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Flow Cytometry Core Lab Manager at BD Biosciences (BDB) immunocytometry headquarters in San Jose. The individual will have the opportunity to build a shared resource laboratory implementing first in class facility operations in the world’s leading flow cytometry company.  Known for its superior flow cytometry reagents and instruments, BD Biosciences is a leading medical device company that is the provider of single cell analysis solutions.  BD Biosciences commercializes reagents, instruments, software, and assays that enable single cell-based scientific discoveries, as well as clinical diagnostic solutions.

Job Responsibilities:

The qualified candidate will have an exciting opportunity to establish and manage a world class Flow Cytometry Core Facility, with responsibilities for implementing best in class flow cytometry practices, synergizing cross-site instrument setup and standardization procedures, and offering flow cytometry training for core lab users.  The candidate must possess demonstrated expertise in flow cytometry instrument set up and optimization, instrument characterization methods, QC methods, as well as instrument maintenance.  Additionally, the position will serve as a strategic link between R&D and other functions such as Applications, Custom instrumentation (SORP), and Systems Technology.

Working in a highly matrixed organization, the qualified candidate will:

  • Design and implement core lab operating procedures
  • Optimize and standardize flow cytometry systems across two BDB geographical sites
  • Establish best practices for cell sorting
  • Offer guidance on multicolor panel design, as well as troubleshoot and resolve performance issues
  • Educate current and new users on best practices of experimental design, acquisition, and analysis of flow cytometric data
  • Establish and maintain Data Organization and Data Management
  • Provide a safe working environment for facility users and monitors safety compliance
  • Participate in the selection of new facility equipment and software with advancing technology
  • Support maintenance of flow cytometry equipment: FACSymphony, LSR Fortessa, FACS Celesta, FACS Canto, Accuri, FACS Presto, FACS Melody, FACS Lyric, Cytoflex, Amnis Image Stream Imaging Cytometer, early development and prototype instruments.

Expansion and sculpting of role:

  • Contribute and expand cytometry educational outreach efforts
  • Contribute to ongoing instrument characterization and optimization efforts
  • Integrate sorting and single cell genomic workflows
  • Keep current on cytometry technologies & evaluate the competitive landscape
  • Provide a critical user perspective in development of next generation reagents, instruments, software, and workflow solutions
  • Design and execute technical studies to define best-practices with emerging technologies
  • Evaluate and provide key insight into users experience, instrument design, and software capabilities
  • Multi-functional resource to Customer Education, Technical Applications Specialists, and Field Service Engineers
  • Interact with peers and experts in the field to keep abreast of advances in cytometry related fields
  • Design and develop specialized methods and/or techniques to provide new protocols in cytometric procedures and assays
  • Leadership skills to define role as business needs evolve

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience operating  flow cytometers.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience working in a Flow Core Facility.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise with BD flow cytometry instrumentation.
  • Previous management experience is a plus.

Knowledge and skills:

  • Software expertise (FACSDiva, FACSChorus, FlowJo, FCS Express)
  • Knowledge of advanced FACS principles.
  • Have a wide variety of flow cytometry experience.
  • Previous experience operating a cell sorters and analyzers.
  • Requires strong analytical problem solving experience.
  • Ability to work alone or in a team environment.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% (domestic).
