As a Staff Mechanical Engineer in the R&D engineering group, you will apply working knowledge of design and engineering principles to develop innovative opto-mechanical, mechanical and fluidics solutions for our instrument product lines. You will specialize on the mechanical precision assemblies that will enable new capability and value to customers.  Your work will enable the field of life sciences, and immunology to have better answers to their biological questions.  You will work across the organization at every stage of the product development cycle, from conception to launch. Note that previous experience in life science or clinical instrumentation is not required.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop, and qualify new mechanical systems based on requirements.

  • Lead and own the development of mechanical sub-systems, both internally and with strategic external OEM partners.

  • Adept at identifying OEM partner capabilities, managing IP and engineering collaborations.

  • Compare and clearly communicate engineering strategy to technical and business audience.

  • Make informed critical decisions weighing risk, time and dependencies of other teams.

  • Analyze data, prepare reports and present results to cross functional teams.

  • Perform modeling of mechanical assemblies over a range of conditions.

  • Perform modeling and budget performance across interconnected subsystems.

  • Perform tolerance analyses, and design of manufacturability.

  • Develop manufacturing processes for the sub-systems you create.

  • Manage the technical deliverables of key suppliers.

  • Ensure compliance to the company's Global Product Development System and design control requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics or a closely related discipline required.

  • Minimum of 8 years of combined academic and commercial experience in mechanical engineering and mechanical systems.

  • Experience in kinematic principles, modern opto-mechanical design, and fabrication techniques including precision and miniaturization.

  • Strong experience in 3D CAD mechanical design and performance analysis with FEA simulation required.

  • Experience taking a concept from feasibility prototype to production.

  • Characterize solutions for optical stability, repeatability, and reliability through structure experiment and test.

  • Experience solving problems in a multidisciplinary environment with engineers and scientists.

  • Must have strong lab skills, with ability to perform and document detail-oriented work with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Willingness to travel up to 10% (global).

Assets:

  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D. with industry experience is desired.

  • Experience with Zemax/Optics Studio preferred.
