The position will primarily focus on algorithm development for trend analysis in flow cytometry.

Summer Intern in Systems Technology will assist in an innovation project to perform a thorough system analysis of flow cytometers and thereby, design appropriate algorithms to enable crucial value addition for the researchers and customers utilizing BD Flow Cytometers. Data from multiple available flow cytometers at BD Biosciences, San Jose as well as existing historical data will be utilized. Interns are expected to arrive at conclusions regarding system variability, dependence of observed features on recorded parameters and possible faults using a data driven approach.

Challenges include system with multiple variables, absence of accurate system model or characterization, and difficulty in linking observed trends in system parameters to observed physical phenomenon. Intern will work closely with corresponding mentor to design and execute experiments to characterize and improve upon the proposed algorithmic approaches. The potential applications of this work are cross functional and are expected to benefit multiple teams, including systems engineering, systems technologies, verification and validation and field service engineering. At the conclusion of the internship, the intern will present the scientific findings to the BD leadership team.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Ph.D. students are welcome to apply as well.
  • Knowledge and capability of devising well designed algorithms in Matlab, Python or a similar platform.
  • Motivated learner, capable of quickly getting up to speed on new techniques (both experimental and theoretical).
  • Ability to quickly seek out, read, understand and execute concepts from scientific literature.
  • Ability to device and conceptualize logical approaches, quickly implement using required software / hardware and demonstrate the efficacy of chosen approach.
  • Generate detailed and complete documentation and present data supported conclusions in written and oral reports.


  • Strong understanding of integrated systems (such as Opto-mechanical devices), optical engineering, systems engineering, lasers and fluidics. Practical experience is a plus.
  • Laboratory experience with optical devices (lenses, mirrors, filters, optical fibers, etc) and electrical equipment (pulse and signal generator, signal analyzer, multimeters, etc).
  • Knowledge and/or experience with flow cytometry, particularly BD flow cytometers.
  • Excellent research and presentation skills; particularly in presenting to an audience outside the domain.
