Job Description Summary

Electronic Technician

Under the direction of the Manufacturing Engineering Department, provide technical support to departmental projects and strategic objectives in support of instrument and sub-assembly manufacturing. This would typically include: bread boarding from sketches and/or schematics; troubleshooting to the component level; some project and design responsibility and related activities: independently running validation tests and maintaining an Engineering Lab book; generating and/or verifying engineering documentation.

Job Description

Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities

Typically includes bread boarding, prototyping, limited design, production support, laboratory maintenance, documentation generation and verification, maintaining lab book. Assignments will be given, with their completion self-managed.

Breadboarding - Construct the preliminary design from verbal instructions and/or drawings in the form of sketches or schematics. Troubleshooting and debug. Recommend improvements. Perform feasibility tests.

Prototyping - Order parts, construct and test design from sketches or preliminary drawings, recommend improvements.

Limited Design - May be given the opportunity to perform limited design functions, either electrical or mechanical. Typically, this will include upgrade/enhancement/support of an existing design or product line. Designs will be subject to the appropriate reviews and require the approval of an appropriate engineer. May be required to perform all the necessary support functions to complete design task.

Production Support- May be called upon to resolve minor manufacturing assembly and test issues to support instrument and sub-assembly production; also perform testing, validations, and designs of experiments under the guidance of the department staff.

  • Follows design and quality guidelines based on GMP, FDA, PACE and ISO guidelines and related BD Quality Standards and Practices.

Self-Managing - Tasks will be assigned. Individual may self-manage tasks with regular contact with project and supervisory personnel.

Lab Maintenance - Perform the assigned responsibility of maintaining the environment of the lab as well as personal area as an efficient and safe work area. Also included is the administration of equipment calibration and test of safety equipment in accordance with the laboratory policy.

Documentation - Typically includes maintaining the necessary records in a lab book of test results. specifications, and other engineering drawings. This also includes generation and verification of Engineering Change Requests, specifications and procedures with the approval of an appropriate engineer.

Education

Must have a High School Diploma or GED. Requires a Technical Certification or two years of advanced training in electronic or mechanical technology, physics or related field; typically, an AA degree or seven years of progressive and relevant experience.

Experience

Typically requires seven years overall experience in an Engineering lab with five years focused on the assembly and test of electronic and electromechanical instruments and sub-assemblies.

Complexity of Duties

While applying technical knowledge, duties typically include:

Works as a member of a manufacturing engineering project teams.

Plans, schedules, and executes assignments within guidelines of instructions received from project personnel.

Generates documents and checks drawings, evaluating for accuracy, correctness and logic.

Constructs, tests and debugs prototype systems including some complex designs or systems. Designs/develops specialized test equipment.

Provides engineering support to manufacturing and production problems

 Utilizes wide variety of test equipment and mechanical measurement tools, including the evaluation of new equipment. Devises test set-ups.

Gathers, correlates and evaluates test data. Generates recommendations for Engineering review

Information sharing with other functional areas.

Supervision Received

While varied, usually plans and arranges own work, with guidance from the department staff. Assigned tasks will offer some latitude for self-management while others have set procedures and deadlines.

Errors (Based on responsibility for preventing errors, degree work is verified or checked by others. and probable loss, damage, loss of customer goodwill, etc. resulting from single occurrence)

Generally, errors could have negative impact on the integrity of the project, sub task, or manufacturing schedule. Construction errors could present physical hazards to self and others. Some impact possible on Company's overall ability to meet or achieve strategic objectives.

Contact with Others

Daily interface with members of the Engineering Department or peers in other departments (i.e., R&D, Customer Service, and Automated Assembly). Occasionally interfacing with customers and vendors, including some Manufacturing and Repair Department training.

Confidential Data

Has access to confidential proprietary drawings, specifications and test data for current products and products under development.


Mental or Visual Demands

Typically, this position requires mental and visual alertness as it relates to working with high voltages, power tools, manual sheet metal equipment, bio-hazards, and other lab equipment. Will be required to handle multiple demands and tasks.

Working Conditions

Works in various environments, typically a Lab; however, job duties may require working in the Manufacturing area, R&D area or at a customer site including exposure to high voltages, bio-hazards and toxic chemicals. Occasionally travels outside the plant.

Character of Supervision

Part-time, immediate supervision of, or direction of several personnel performing the same or directly related technical work.

Scope of Supervision

Personnel supervised may be direct employees or contract personnel.
