GENERAL FUNCTION:

  • Reporting to the Director, WW Operations Engineering, the Sr. Mgr., Packaging Engineering, is responsible for managing primary and secondary packaging technology, projects, programs and the engineering team associated with the development and implementation of new and improved medical diagnostic products and processes for the Reagent & Media Cluster (R&MC).
  • Works closely with the Sr. Mgr., Molding Engineering and team developing and improving primary and secondary packaging solutions for new and existing products.
  • Assists the Dir. Engineering and Engineering Leadership Team (Eng LT) with technology strategy, personnel and business matters.
  • Provides technical and strategy support to other functional groups within BDX to meet business objectives.
  • Responsible for technology sensing associated with materials, equipment and processes for primary and secondary packaging associated with industrial and medical diagnostic products.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE & PROBLEM SOLVING:

  • As the R&MC subject matter expert (SME) for primary and secondary product packaging technology, applies advanced technical principles, concepts and practical experience to complex technical packaging challenges associated with industrial and medical diagnostic products.
  • Provides innovative, ingenious and cost-effective solutions to technical problems, applying expert technical skills in primary and secondary packaging material technology, process technologies, process innovation and development.
  • Familiar with internal and industry SME resources for technical assistance as needed.  Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts as part of Continuous Improvement (CI) for packaging in FDA regulated product and packaging applications.
  • Drives the use of Six Sigma, Design for Six Sigma, and Design for Manufacturability/Assembly principles and tools leading to robust solutions for existing and new products and processes.
  • Acts as a sounding board, consultant and/or mentor for the molding, packaging and engineering teams, plants and procurement and planning functions in assessing technical and business issues and developing solutions.
  • Erroneous decisions or recommendations typically result in organization’s failure to achieve critical tactical or strategic objectives.

CROSS FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION:

  • Serves as the R&MC spokesperson for primary and secondary packaging technology on projects across the cluster.  Acts as an advisor to management and outside contacts on advanced technical studies and applications.
  • Collaborates with R&D on advanced technological primary and secondary packaging concepts and ideas, guiding their development into final products and processes.  Provides operational process technology leadership and expertise for part and packaging design and assembly on multifunctional new product implementation teams.
  • Works closely with the BDX Strategic Sourcing groups to meet safety, quality, availability and cost requirements for primary and secondary packaging materials used by R&MC products.  Participates and provides technical leadership selecting packaging material suppliers and supplier audits.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT:

  • Manages primary and secondary packaging projects with varying complexity and staging from concept through design, prototyping, build and commercialization.
  • Develops or participates in the development of R&MC manufacturing architecture and strategy for primary and secondary packaging of products.
  • Functions as a Core Team Leader (CTL) for a product development or CI project.
  • Manages staffing of the packaging engineering group and resource allocation for execution of project portfolios.

LEADERSHIP:

  • Assists Dir. Engineering with development of product packaging strategies for parts and components, and alignment of the same with Operations and Business Platform strategies.
  • Provides technical consultation and recommends direction to cluster manufacturing plants for their product packaging requirements.
  • Anticipates consequences of actions and/or decisions.  Makes decisions that are in the best interest of the company.
  • With consultative direction, works toward agreed upon individual impact goals (IIGs), strategic and long-range objectives for self and packaging engineering team.
  • Collaboratively creates and assesses career and performance development objectives and plans for packaging engineering team members.
  • Assignments are often self-initiated and/or extensions of organizational objectives.  Determines and pursues courses of action for self and packaging team necessary to obtain desired results.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides technical and financial status reports to management on a regular and timely basis.
  • Follows division policies and guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • BS in Packaging Engineering or an applicable scientific or engineering field required; an advanced engineering or scientific degree desirable.
  • Formal education and/or coursework in primary and secondary packaging technology preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 12+ years of relevant experience or a combination of equivalent education and experience in development of primary and secondary packaging solutions for use with high-speed automated manufacturing equipment.  Background in high volume production of medical device, in-vitro diagnostic products, and pharmaceutical products preferred.
  • Experience in organizing and leading engineering and cross-functional project teams, with demonstrated capability in project management.
  • Experience estimating and executing capital projects, often exceeding $1MM.  Extensive experience and notable success designing and developing primary and secondary packaging components, assemblies, tools and processes, process innovation and design, process capability and manufacturing cost analysis.
  • High level of technical competence; creative problem solver, with ability to understand and apply fundamental engineering principles to process development and project applications.
