Job Description SummaryResponsible for directing and managing all phases of manufacturing operations for the identified Business Unit (Rubber, Injection Molding, Wing Sets, Tubes, or Straight needles) in a way that provides the highest quality products and regulatory paperwork at cost levels that enable competitive sales pricing strategies. The BU Manager will establish high ethical conduct expectations for all employees in the performance of their duties. The BU Manager is responsible for organizing, directing, and coordinating all activities related to safety, quality, delivery, cost, and talent objectives and fully implementing the manufacturing strategies that support the annual plant objectives. Will also facilitate and influence the development and execution of annual departmental strategic playbook, annual departmental budgets, and financial performance. Reports directly to the Plant Manager of the Sumter BD Specimen Management manufacturing facility.

The BU Manager will establish high ethical conduct expectations for all employees in the performance of their duties. The BU Manager is responsible for organizing, directing, and coordinating all activities related to safety, quality, delivery, cost, and talent objectives and fully implementing the manufacturing strategies that support the annual plant objectives. Will also facilitate and influence the development and execution of annual departmental strategic playbook, annual departmental budgets, and financial performance. Reports directly to the Plant Manager of the Sumter BD Specimen Management manufacturing facility.
Follow and enforce all local and corporate BD safety regulations policies/procedures.
Align with and enforce all corporate and local BD quality policies / procedures / practices through consistent application of sound Quality Assurance principles and in accordance with the Quality Systems Manual.
Closely monitor compliance activities to ensure that the assigned department/BU meets all regulatory agency requirements on the local, state, federal, and international levels. All compliance programs will be coordinated with Specimen Management (SM) and Integrated Diagnostic Systems (IDS) as deemed necessary to ensure proper direction and adherence to Company policies and procedures.
Responsible for the maintenance of all assigned department / Business Unit facilities, grounds and equipment in accordance with established company policies and governmental agency regulations.
Effectively manage all assigned department / BU assets to ensure maximum utilization of capital employed and to achieve the highest possible return on net assets. This would include the utilization of equipment, facility and work in process or finished goods inventory dollars.
Plan, prepare and recommend an annual operating budget. Upon approval, establish and implement a monitoring system of plant performance to budget. In addition, balance of the year financial forecasting will be done and submitted as directed by SM Finance.
Responsible for the planning and implementation of cost reduction programs, waste reduction, quality improvement, and productivity improvement programs. As required, these will be coordinated within the plant, SM R&D, SM QA, and other plant locations as appropriate.
Constantly evaluate manufacturing systems, methods, procedures, and controls and ensure changes are implemented in a timely manner.
Lead the change management necessary to encourage the understanding and use of new technologies geared to improving product quality or manufacturing efficiencies.
Direct supervision of (2) employees; Manufacturing Manager and Process Engineering Manager, who respectively have responsibility for the day-to-day operations and engineering activities end to end.
Responsible for employee coaching, training, performance management, and development.
Prepare capacity analysis in coordination with Supply Chain. Align with Finance on subsequent investments required. Review main areas of concern and alerts as necessary. Follow up with Continuous Improvement leadership, as needed.
Filter, report or explain information about business performance / marketing strategies with plant Leadership Team to maintain a strategic alignment between the plant and the other Business Units.
Work with Business Integrators on strategic projects such as manufacturing transfers, make vs. buy assessments, risk mitigation, business continuity exercises, etc.
Responsible for accuracy and issuance of reports to Accounting, Local and Corporate Management that provide data for budgets (long term planning), financial forecasts, status of production, inventories, and backorders.
Represent BD in the community and in professional organizations on a local or regional level.

Educational and Experience Requirements:
BS Degree in Business, Engineering, or relevant field
Minimum of 15 years manufacturing experience
Minimum of 10 years of experience performing in a similar role within a manufacturing setting
Safety knowledge from a regulatory and compliance standpoint as well as how to develop related processes that drive injury free performance
Talent Development and succession planning capability, ability to hire select and hire talent, demonstrated career development of core staff for advancement.
High speed manufacturing in an automated environment required. Medical Device manufacturing is a plus.
Quality Focused – Must be versed with quality control, SPC – Statistical Process Control and validation processes.
Financial acumen, P&L responsibility in standard cost accounting, budgeting experience, monthly and quarterly forecasting, accountability for variance explanations and strategy for improvement, able to articulate volume leverage, standard cost earn, and understanding of the financial levers to drive success.
Leadership capability - servant leadership understanding, ability to motivate and create teamwork, ability to influence others with a style that is inclusive, able to hold team accountable for results. Able to articulate ability to navigate hurdles, drive teamwork, and execute project management to drive results.
Lean Methodology – versed in Lean Tiered Management concepts and processes, willing and able to roll up their sleeves and spend time in the Gemba to help the team win. Analytical problem solving approach with high mechanical proficiency. Demonstrated capability with “Turnaround” in an operations environment and/or proven capability to drive continuous improvement.
Communications – Must be an effective and professional with verbal and written communications. Articulate, confident, and comfortable with communications on the shop floor up to senior leadership.
Strategy Development – Demonstrated capability to develop 3-5 year strategic plans for operational continuous improvement. Able to break down large complex problems into actionable steps.
Understanding of industry standards and regulations (ISO, FDA, OSHA, ASTM)
Proficiency with SAP (preferred)
