BDI Surgery is situated in a central location, surrounded by a scenic coastline with easy access to T.F. Green Airport, AMTRAK Train Stations and Route 95, a major highway connecting to Providence, Connecticut, Boston and New York City within a short amount of time.         

Description:

Under direct supervision and guidance, this co-op will provide an opportunity to be exposed to the medical device field and offer hands on experience working within the Biosurgery Research & Development group on hemostatic agents for the control of surgical bleeding. Working with cross-functional product development teams and alongside experienced engineers, you will contribute to design solutions and the advancement of new product development projects. This individual would be responsible for compiling, analyzing and reporting operational test and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified products, processes or materials. You will be assigned to specific product and/or support teams.

Duties Include:

Designing and conducting chemical modification of natural and synthetic polymers.

Identifying appropriate characterization methods and evaluating reaction efficiency.

Project/product development tasks to include any of the following: developing and writing experimental protocols, characterizing and evaluating compounds and product prototypes, developing and documenting new product concepts, documenting of all results.

Preparing standard reports/documentation to communicate results to the technical team.

Training technicians/operators on new processes and/or test procedures.

Participate in innovation challenges sponsored by the organization.
Special projects as assigned.  

Requirements:

In order to be eligible for the R&D Co-op position, the candidate must be pursuing an MS or PhD degree in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Science, or Biomedical Engineering with experience in chemical modifications and able to fulfill a 6 month co-op.  Experience working with hazardous chemicals and the necessary safety precautions is a must.  Experience with carbohydrate chemistry is preferred.   A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required (or 4.0 for those enrolled in programs with a 5.0 scale). The student must be available to work during session indicated and have a demonstrated record of leadership and/or participation in campus programs and/or community service activities. The candidate should be a driven individual with an interest in biomaterials.

* This position is located in Warwick, RI and student will be required to provide his/her own transportation.
