This position is part of the Manufacturing/Operations organization for the Diagnostic Solutions BU and reports directly to the Packaging Engineering Manager. This position supports the organization’s central initiatives by driving growth through the development and implementation of innovative packaging solutions and by funding growth through cost savings and standardization efforts. This role is responsible for managing technical packaging projects from concept to the commercialization phases for new and existing products in a multi-functional environment working closely with the following functional groups: Manufacturing, Procurement, Supply Chain, Marketing, Quality Management, Regulatory Affairs, R&D, and Distribution. This position also requires working with selected external technical teams at packaging material suppliers. This function combines solid technical expertise in packaging applications, project management and multi-functional team skills to provide a complete source of packaging services (concept development, feasibility, performance testing, validation, commercialization and troubleshooting).  This position will be a key member of the Packaging Engineering Team, with opportunities for advancement and active support from senior level packaging engineers.

Position Responsibilities

  • Handle project activities to achieve business objectives including budget, timing, and packaging performance

  • Provide status reports to management and key collaborators on a consistent cadence

  • Responsible for packaging projects to include package design, packaging process development and optimization, cost reductions, manufacturing efficiency support, and resolution of packaging-related defects

  • Contributor to the conceptualization, initiation, development, and commercialization of packaging improvements and processes including design generation, prototype development, specification development, component validation, and functionality testing for primary, secondary and tertiary packaging

  • Handle and lead packaging projects effectively and professionally to ensure agreed upon key business objectives and product launches are met 

  • Provide timely package engineering support for ongoing production needs of all packaging materials related to the manufacturing of related products

  • Ensure package and product compatibility by identifying and completing package performance testing

  • Assists in development of technical strategy to accomplish project goals

  • Provides guidance to Package Engineering Manager to accomplish departmental and organizational strategies including cost reduction, reduced cycle time and improved quality ideas

  • Assist in efforts to research and develop new processes and equipment for new packaging

  • Support engagement with suppliers to eliminate process variables and maintain reliable flow of packaging materials 

  • Support new product development programs from initial design phase to commercialization with concentration on process design, validation and planning under the guidance of Sr Packaging Engineers 

  • Collaborate with R&D, Marketing, Procurement, Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, Planning, Finance and outside suppliers to solve manufacturing and design related problems

  • Support root cause analysis activities for all packaging-related issues, including support for implementing problem resolution and corrective actions

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Solid communication skills, both written and verbal, to deliver information and provide clear positions on issues and solutions

  • Ability to work effectively across cultural differences with manufacturing teams world-wide, including but not limited to Canada, Puerto Rico, Germany, China and Japan

  • Solid collaboration, leadership and project management skills

  • Assist in determining priorities based on key business objectives and management of multiple projects simultaneously

  • High degree of creativity and ability to work independently yet collaboratively with other functional areas

  • Ability to interact well with peers, subordinates and leadership within multi-disciplined teams

Required Education and Experience

  • BS Degree in Package Engineering, Plastic Engineering, Plastic Technology or related field

  • 1-5 years Package Engineering experience.  Background in the healthcare, medical device manufacturing industry, and/or an FDA-regulated industry a plus

  • 1-5 years’ experience with some combination of packaging systems/materials preferred including extrusion and injection blow molding, injection molding and/or glass molding, bottle/cap configurations, laminated structures, folding cartons, corrugate and labeling

  • 1-5 years’ experience with some combination of liquid filling equipment, heat sealing, molding, thermoforming and/or sterilization processes preferred   

  • Experience with rapid prototyping methods and recommendation of resources preferred 

  • Experience with process and mold validations, equipment qualifications, material selection, corrective action and vendor selection/qualification preferred

  • Knowledge and understanding of tooling prints, part prints, inspection procedures and SPC analysis

  • Ability to fix and problem solve solutions.  Use and/or willingness to learn and apply Six Sigma fields/methodologies and DOE preferred

  • Knowledge of GMP and ISO requirements preferred 

  • Knowledge of software programs including Solidworks, AutoCad, Microsoft Office, MS Project or equivalent, TOPS and Visio preferred

  • Experience handling multiple priorities and working in a fast-paced, regulated environment preferred

  • Must be a great teammate with ability to work independently
