Job Summary:


As a Staff Hardware Engineer at Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), you will be a key contributor to the design, development, and testing of innovative medical device hardware. You will leverage your expertise to ensure the creation of high-quality, reliable, and compliant electronic systems that advance healthcare technology. The ideal candidate will have excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting experience along with strong written and verbal communication skills. The ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts and able to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team in a fast-paced environment is key for this opportunity.



Job Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and assemble custom automated test fixtures and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems to support hardware validation and verification testing, adhering to industry standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., IEC 60601).

  • Read schematic to use signal outputs from medical devices to develop test fixtures to automate and collect data

  • Conduct detailed analysis, simulation, and prototyping of hardware designs and associate NI-based test systems to verify functionality, performance, and reliability.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with software, mechanical, systems, reliability engineering, and manufacturing engineering teams to ensure seamless integration, manufacturability and design for testability (DFT)of hardware designs.

  • Develop and execute comprehensive test plans and procedures for hardware verification and validation, utilizing LabVIEW-based automation where applicable, including EMC/EMI testing, environmental testing, and functional performance testing.

  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting complex hardware issues and automated test equipment, performing root cause analysis and implementing effective corrective actions.

  • Prepare and maintain thorough design documentation, including specifications, schematics, test fixture wiring diagrams, BOMs, test reports, and design review materials throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Act as a technical mentor to junior engineers, providing guidance and support on hardware design principles, best practices, and problem-solving techniques.

  • Stay abreast of new technologies, industry trends, and regulatory changes relevant to medical device hardware development, and propose innovative solutions.

  • Participate in risk management activities, including hazard analysis and FMEA, to identify and mitigate potential hardware-related risks.


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.

  • 8+ years of experience in hardware design and development

  • Strong proficiency in analog and digital circuit design, including microcontrollers/microprocessors, FPGAs, sensor interfaces, power management, and communication protocols (e.g., I2C, SPI, UART, USB, Ethernet).

  • Technically adept in LabVIEW programming and the physical assembly and configuration of National Instruments (NI) hardware.

  • Proven experience in the design and construction of automated test fixtures and electromechanical test assemblies

  • Demonstrated experience with hardware verification and validation methodologies, including hands-on experience with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers).

  • Familiarity with regulatory standards for medical devices (e.g., FDA QSR, ISO 13485, IEC 60601).

  • Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for testability (DFT).

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Electronics Engineering.

  • Hardware design and development experience within the medical device industry.

  • Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software.

  • NI Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) or Architect (CLA) certification.

  • Knowledge of Test Method Validation (TMV) with practical applications including Gage R&R and alternative MSAs.

  • Background in SQL development and associated database toolkits for test data management.
