About the role

The CONNECT CoE Senior Diagnostic Solution Expert Microbiology is a senior subject-matter expert and capability builder within the Center of Excellence. The role has a strong practical focus on delivering and continuously improving hands-on training for the Waters ADx Microbiology portfolio. Through structured knowledge sharing, in the field coaching and cross-training, the role strengthens capability across the CONNECT team and within the countries and helps establish reliable back-up coverage for key training programs. In addition, the role provides expert support, contributes field insights and supports the roll out of existing and new Professional Services and continuous-improvement initiatives across EMEA.

Key Responsibilities

Training & Education

• Deliver quarterly hands-on training from the Waters Heidelberg EMEA ADx training facilities for BD Phoenix M50, BD Phoenix Autoprep, BD Bruker MALDI, BD BACTEC FX-40/FX/FXI, BD Epicenter and BD BACTEC MGIT/MGIT II to Application Specialists, Professional Services colleagues and distributors, using standardized and engaging delivery methods. Additional training sessions on request and in line with business needs.
• Deliver TB eXiST training on request, and support the preparation and transfer of relevant training content and expertise into the BD Synapsys training approach when the corresponding functionality becomes available.
• Contribute to the design, delivery and continuous improvement of impactful end-to-end BD Synapsys Microbiology workflow trainings, connecting technical content with laboratory processes, implementation activities and user needs. Prepare select DSE/CoE colleagues to take (co)ownership of its ongoing delivery once the trainings are established and ready for deployment.
• Support the development of a microbiology training framework, including a practical “day in the lab” format in local customer laboratories that gives learners first-hand exposure to real laboratory workflows, practices and challenges.
• Establish structured knowledge sharing and cross-training within the CONNECT team to broaden team capability, retain critical expertise and maintain reliable back-up coverage for key training programs.
• Coach DSE colleagues and local application specialist through co-delivery, observation, in the field On the Job training & feedback and train-the-trainer activities, supporting progression toward consistent, independent delivery of assigned training.
• Develop new and maintain standardized application specialist curricula, including theory, hands-on, practical exercises, on-the-job learning, master modules and trainer guidance.
• Use learner feedback, field insights, competency checks, refresher activities and proportionate training-quality indicators to support continued proficiency and curriculum improvement.
• Develop and maintain training materials and practical knowledge resources that support consistent delivery across the DSE and Application Specialist communities. Collaborate with Global Services Education and Training teams to align practices, content and documentation where appropriate.
• Maintain complete and accurate learning records in the Learning Management System to support audit readiness and applicable quality requirements.
• Coordinate BD Heidelberg C2 microbiology labs according to local guidelines, safety and biosafety regulations.

Support

• Provide second-line Microbiology expert support (including Informatics and Core (Clinical) Microbiology) for complex issues reported by colleagues or local teams.
• Provide targeted field support for critical issues or where local proficiency is not yet available, while transferring knowledge to strengthen local capability.
• Monitor product- and workflow-related trends, document recurring insights and escalate them through the appropriate channels when required.
• Collaborate with regional and global teams, including Triple S, Technical Services, Informatics and Quality, to support root-cause analysis and appropriate corrective or preventive actions in response to customer complaints.
• Stay current with customer workflows, needs and challenges through regular field visits, on-the-job activities, customer training and troubleshooting events in collaboration with local teams.
• Support the development of standardized customer-training tools and content for the microbiology portfolio.
• Support local teams with the configuration of microbiology solutions, including BD Synapsys, so that solution setup and training reflect the intended laboratory process.

Coaching and mentoring

• Coach and mentor Application Specialists and DSE colleagues to support consistent competency standards across countries.
• Support development pathways for selected DSE/CoE colleagues to progress from observation and co-delivery to independent delivery of assigned hands-on and/or Synapsys workflow training.
• Work with the EMEA Professional Services team and Regional Marketing to support deployment of the Customer Engagement Model and clarify the contribution of Application Specialists to solution design, implementation, sustainment and optimization.
• Support the development and adoption of standardized processes, tools and Professional Services approaches, including training internal associates in their use.
• Identify and contribute to targeted continuous-improvement initiatives that strengthen training delivery, knowledge transfer and cross-functional ways of working.

Commercial Support

• In collaboration with Regional Marketing and Commercial Excellence, contribute technical,- and workflow expertise to value-proposition training initiatives, and broader enablement needs for field-facing teams.
• Represent EMEA field,- and customer insights when contributing to new-product requirements, launch readiness and training plans.
• Support GA launch readiness for BD BACTEC FXI, BD BACTEC MGIT II and Synapsys ID/AST solutions, as well as future controlled launches, by helping define and execute appropriate training and knowledge-transfer plans.

Professional Services

• Contribute microbiology and workflow expertise to the development of relevant, sustainable Professional Services that reflect evolving customer needs.
• Deliver Professional Services in the field and help prepare local teams to execute/scale established services. Support local deployment by developing practical processes, tools, content, training and proportionate indicators for consistent execution.
• Support defined process-improvement engagements identified during solution design, such as workflow optimization, process redesign and lean laboratory design, and help gather agreed baseline and follow-up measures where applicable.

You can translate complex product and workflow topics into clear, engaging learning experiences, and you work collaboratively to build sustainable capability across teams and countries. 

To be successful in this role, you will ideally bring:

• A degree in Life Sciences or a related discipline.
• Strong knowledge of microbiology laboratory workflows, processes and techniques, ideally gained through experience working in or closely with a microbiology laboratory.
• Relevant hands-on knowledge of BD Phoenix, BD BACTEC FX/FXI and BD BACTEC MGIT, or the ability to rapidly build trainer-level proficiency across these platforms.
• Experience delivering practical, hands-on technical training; familiarity with train-the-trainer methods and adult-learning principles is an advantage.
• The ability to connect products, software, laboratory processes and user roles into clear end-to-end workflow training, with experience of Synapsys or comparable laboratory informatics considered an advantage.
• A collaborative approach to knowledge sharing, with the ability to coach and cross-train colleagues toward consistent, independent delivery and reliable back-up coverage within the team for assigned training programs.
• Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to adapt content and delivery to individuals, small groups and larger audiences.
• Fluency in English; additional EMEA languages are an advantage.
• The ability to build constructive working relationships with colleagues, customers, distributors and stakeholders across functions and organizational levels.
• Experience contributing to cross-functional projects or programs, supported by strong planning, organizational and facilitation skills.
• A proactive and adaptable approach, with the ability to manage changing priorities, ambiguity and unexpected challenges.
• A continuous-improvement mindset and an appreciation of standardized processes, measurable outcomes and proportionate KPIs. Lean Practitioner certification, or comparable process-improvement experience, is preferred.
• Willingness and ability to travel across the EMEA region up to 75%, including occasional travel at short notice to meet business needs.
