Job Overview

Under the guidance and/or authorization of the Senior Engineering manager, provide technical support for manufacturing, engineering projects, and programs within the manufacturing engineering team.  Primary focus is on support of manufacturing.  Additional responsibilities will be engineering support of the design, fabrication, implementation and debugging of new equipment and modifications to existing equipment, process development, technology development and potentially waste reduction, process improvements and overall line efficiency improvement initiatives

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Promotes and supports safety policies

  • Support the manufacturing operation by ensuring the correct operation of manufacturing equipment.  This includes diagnosis of complex problems in machine operation and the development and implementation of solutions to these problems.

  • Supports division and OSHA safety policies and guidelines.

  • Supports the manufacturing operation by ensuring the correct operation of manufacturing equipment. This includes diagnosis of complex problems in machine operation and the development and implementation of solutions to these problems.

  • Participates in the design and installation of new manufacturing equipment.

  • Self-Managing:  Will self manage assigned tasks to meet manufacturing goals and schedules.  Will maintain regular contact with lead personnel.  Will prioritize and manage multiple and potentially conflicting demands for time and resources.

  • Documentation:  Creates and maintains appropriate records of work including documentation of engineering drawings and test procedures validation activities and results.  Archives electronic files as required.

  • Supervision and guidance:  May be required to provide technical guidance to others within engineering and plant operations as needed. 

  • Applies technical knowledge to solve unique problems on manufacturing and process control equipment.  Familiarity with troubleshooting and programming techniques for PLCs, MMI’s, electromechanical sensors and controllers is required.

  • Works as member of technical team solving complex problems, implementing engineering upgrades and installations for manufacturing and process control equipment.

  • Plans and executes assignments within guidelines of instructions received from project personnel.

  • Assembles and installs electrical control hardware and wiring. Able to install electrical conduits and raceways for manufacturing equipment and control hardware.

  • Generates engineering and manufacturing process documents.  Checks engineering drawings, evaluating correctness of information, accuracy, and logic.  

  • Experience with troubleshooting and performing programming changes to ladder logic and manufacturing software including RSLogix, FactoryTalk, Sequel Server, Panel Builder, and other PLC and MMI software as required. Familiar with the programming of servo-driven systems.  Capable of downloading and uploading programs and parameters with laptop software as well as teach pendants.

  • Capable of developing applications for interfacing automation and automated systems to databases and reporting systems used in production environment. 

  • Assists with integration of complex engineering solutions using software, mechanical and electrical components.

  • Utilizes a wide variety of electrical and mechanical test and fabrication equipment in the execution of assigned tasks. Must be proficient in the use of diagnostic instruments including oscilloscopes, DMMs and logic analyzers.

  • Gathers, correlates and evaluates test data; generates recommendations used for engineering and review.

  • Shares information efficiently with other areas, particularly Manufacturing, Quality and product support personnel.

  • Assists with documentation and drawing updates utilizing AutoCad and other CAD software as required.

  • Must have good interpersonal skills. Interfaces regularly with members of the Engineering & Process Technology department, Plant Maintenance and Operations personnel.

Qualifications

  • This position requires a high degree of technical skill and experience in working with a wide variety of production equipment.  Critical skills needed are a working knowledge of controls, vision systems, mechanical, electro-mechanical and pneumatic equipment, and the ability to recognize, define and correct equipment deficiencies.  This position also requires the ability to collaborate with various other support groups (i.e., Quality, Production, Facilities, Machine Shop, etc.) to implement equipment installations and improvements.

  • Must have a High School diploma or GED.

  • Associates degree or 10 years of relevant and technically progressive experience including controls, electrical design, repair or maintenance of electro-mechanical equipment within a manufacturing environment is preferred.

  • Duties require knowledge of current technology and state of the art in a wide variety of disciplines with familiarity in electronic controls, high-speed assembly operations, standards development and statistical engineering, OSHA and FDA validation requirements.
