Job Description Summary

Medication Management Solutions (MMS) is seeking a Human Factors Engineer to focus on Human Factors and User Experience Design (HF+UXD).  The ideal candidate for this role is passionate about design for user experience with proven capabilities in visual design, information architecture, and interaction design for both standalone software and integrated software/hardware solutions.  They have a passion for interacting with customers and doing user research to drive the human factors engineering process. 

This individual will work as a member of a multidisciplinary team on key programs and initiatives across MMS, using evidence-based tools to drive user-centered product development principles proven to reduce risks, minimize development costs, and improve market acceptance of solutions.

The HF+UXD will work within the MMS User Experience Design Team (UXD).  The goal of the UXD Team is to stimulate and lead concept and technology innovation spanning multiple product platforms including Dispensing Technologies (e.g. BD PyxisTM & BD RowaTM) and Infusion Systems (e.g., BD AlarisTM & CME Ambulatory Systems).  The role of HF+UXD within this group is to bring knowledge and expertise in user-centered design that begins with the initiation of programs and transitions into design and development.  The HF+UXD will have the opportunity to engage in numerous MMS product development programs across the business groups.

About the role

Medication Management Solutions (MMS) is seeking a passionate and experienced Human Factors Engineer to join its User Experience Design Team (UXD), focusing on Human Factors and User Experience Design (HF+UXD). This role is ideal for someone who thrives on designing intuitive, user-centered solutions across both software and integrated hardware/software platforms. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of innovative healthcare technologies such as BD Pyxis™, BD Rowa™, BD Alaris™, and CME Ambulatory Systems. They will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to apply evidence-based design principles that enhance usability, reduce risk, and improve product adoption in clinical environments.

As a key contributor to MMS product development initiatives, the HF+UXD Engineer will lead and support human factors activities from concept through regulatory submission. Responsibilities include conducting user research, usability testing, task analyses, and cognitive walkthroughs, as well as authoring documentation for global regulatory compliance. The role demands strong communication and leadership skills to influence cross-functional teams, mentor junior engineers, and advocate for user needs throughout the product lifecycle. Main responsibilities will include:

  • Apply creative problem-solving strategies and techniques to get tactical, innovative, and disruptive ideas launched.

  • Seek to create the best possible product or service for our customers by finding the sweet spot between customers’ needs, business constraints, and technical capabilities.

  • Able to understand business goals and link them to design directions and product architecture and advocate for short-term solutions that support long-term product visions and business strategies.

  • Lead brainstorming and ideating sessions, report outs to stakeholders, and innovation research

  • Conduct Task Analyses, Usability Audits, and Cognitive Walkthroughs, analyze results, and provide recommendations to product teams and cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Collaborate closely with interface designers, engineers, the marketing team, and business leaders to define detailed designs that meet customer needs and to motivate teams to seek, utilize, and apply customer insights throughout the product and service lifecycle.

  • Advocate for user needs and drive design recommendations based on usability standards and best practices.

  • Lead planning and execution of formative and summative usability studies to evaluate current and future products.

  • Analyze data and compile study findings for multidisciplinary teams of designers, engineers, and product managers across the company.

  • Author HFE documentation needed for creating Usability Engineering File for regulatory submissions according to the requirements of medical device regulators around the world (FDA HFE Guideline, IEC 62366, ANSI / AAMI HE75).

  • Establish relationships with third-party vendors for usability study recruitment and coordination.

  • Manage human factors activities across various projects and provide schedules and status to management.

  • Participate in cross-functional core team meetings to ensure usability requirements are met.

  • Develop and evangelize a culture of design that is focused on the experience of the user and patient.

  • Teach human factors processes and understanding of our customers to cross-functional project teams as well as leaders and less-senior human factors engineers.

  • Present and advise on human factors topics across the organization.

  • Without appreciable direction, take responsibility for directing and coordinating all human factors activities necessary to complete a major product development program or several small projects.

  • Lead efforts to develop processes and procedures that align with FDA/international human factors standards.

  • Provide technical supervision to less experienced human factors engineers and may be responsible for the management of a small workgroup.

About you

  • 10+ years of experience in product development with the application of Human Factors Engineering to product/system design in a regulated environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Factors Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, Human-Centered Design, Cognitive Psychology, Industrial Design, or related discipline preferred. A Master’s degree is strongly preferred.

  • Working knowledge of applicable standards and industry guidance for medical devices and usability engineering including IEC 62366-1, FDA Guidance for Human Factors (2016), IEC 62366-2, HE75, ISO 13485, FDA Guidance for Design Controls, & ISO 14971.

  • Proven track record developing and executing usability studies including creating a research plan, overseeing recruitment, moderation, analysis, and creating/presenting final reports.

  • Experience in HFE principles and methodologies (ergonomics, human-computer/machine interface, data collection, data analysis, etc.).

  • Experience in applying human factors techniques on programs across product lifecycle (user research, prototyping, formative & summative product evaluation, etc.).

  • Experience in planning and conducting usability studies (formative/summative) and performing use-related risk analysis.

  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed (domestically and internationally), approximately 10% of the time.

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in a technical field (human-computer interaction, systems engineering, human factors engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial design, or biomedical engineering preferred).

  • Highly motivated self-starter able to achieve results with minimal guidance.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas on multiple levels.

  • Strong creative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong technical judgment, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong facilitation and analytic skills with an open mind.

  • Proficient knowledge of engineering first principles.

  • Working understanding of the End-to-End Product Development Process.

  • Proficient in at least one of the following to support innovation, design, and development:

  • Sketching or Graphic Design

  • 3D Modeling, Drafting, and Physical Prototyping (SolidWorks Preferred)

  • Wireframing and Digital Prototyping (Adobe XD and Axure preferred)

  • Technology Development in areas such as but not limited to Mechanical, Electrical, or Software Engineering

  • Demonstrated creation of new concepts and Intellectual Property (IP).
