Job Description Summary

GIE Molding Staff Engineer is responsible for Component and Tooling Design and Process Implementation across the SM BU and is positioned to ensure that the company's component design, supply, cost, etc. are aligned to SM business expectations. This position provides expert engineering skill, judgement, and mentoring of junior engineers. He/she is responsible for assigned projects within the SM BU portfolio. This role will oversee the planning, coordination and oversight in the development and implementation of new and/or replacement molds and related activities.

GIE Molding Staff Engineer is responsible for Component and Tooling Design and Process Implementation across the SM BU and is positioned to ensure that the company's component design, supply, cost, etc. are aligned to SM business expectations. This position provides expert engineering skill, judgement, and mentoring of junior engineers. He/she is responsible for assigned projects within the SM BU portfolio. This role will oversee the planning, coordination and oversight in the development and implementation of new and/or replacement molds and related activities.

Main responsibilities include:

Mold design, development and industrialization:

  • Responsible for molding cell (mold, press, EOAT, etc) build activities included but not limited to URS, vendor selection, PO creation, mold design reviews, follow up with supplier on mold build status milestones, FOT, FAT, and SAT activities and validation (IQ, OQ, PQ and vertical ramp up).

  • Build competitive advantage through the leverage of manufacturing process technology.

  • Create capital appropriation documents CB-2. 

  • Coordinate with peers in SM BU to ensure adequate resources to support mold build activities

  • GIE Molding Staff Engineer will contribute to the innovative process and first equipment development for the SM BU new products development and lead industrialization activities.

  • Leads suppliers and external design teams (vendor) for capital projects to manage cost, lead time and scope.

  • Molds/Molding Cell Machine retrofits and upgrades (modernization) of existing equipment. ​

  • Partnerships with procurement for vendor selection.

  • Ensure that BDX mold and hot runner build standards are used for new equipment builds.

Functional Leadership & People Development:

  • Communicate clear priorities and objectives.

  • Actively participate within a truly inclusive team organization which uses the capabilities across the SM BU

  • Drives individual engagement, performance, and results.

  • Responsible for communicating assigned projects with the appropriate personnel and departments.

  • Provide feedback and validation that the equipment design meets safety and operational standards based on experience and validation from respective stakeholders.

  • Develop innovative concepts for mechanical systems and equipment based on project requirements, industry trends, and standard methodologies.

  • Support operations during a production crisis. (quality, supplier, etc.)​

  • Comply with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired outcomes from position:

Molds build and deliver on time

  • Molds completed right the first time (unless steel safe adjustment is planned)

  • FAT/SAT/Validation completed on time with no repeats

  • Prepare an installation plan and full validation of equipment

  • Manage the integration of new equipment, validation, and vertical ramp up into the existing manufacturing process ensuring the training plan and competence assessments are completed

  • Ensure minimal disruption to ongoing operations during equipment or software integration, addressing any issues or roadblocks

  • Support the documentation of equipment instruction and process parameters and support the site for training on the new equipment and applications

  • Oversee existing tools and resources needed to support equipment maintenance programs, center lining procedures, and to ensure reliability and up-time

  • Achieve targeted OEE and waste results

  • Capital spend management with 95% or better accuracy

  • Establish a relationship between Molding Key Process Input Variables (KPIVs) and Key Process Output variables (KPOVs)

  • Responsible for execution of process verification, process validation and production ramp up activities for molding

  • Seamless handover to plant team for production

  • Improved equipment efficiency and reduced downtime

Expected competencies for the job:

Technical Molding Engineering

  • Scientific Molding & Process Development (RJG/Decoupled preferred)

  • Establishes standards for process windows, DOEs, decoupled molding, and capability (Cp/Cpk); remediates chronic defects.

  • Mold Design, Hot runner design, Tooling & Maintenance Lifecycle (experience desired)

  • Lead mold build design reviews with vendor

  • Preventive/predictive maintenance working experience; refurbishment/retirement decisions; spare strategy.

  • Polymers & Materials

  • Resin behavior, moisture management, degradation, and their impact on quality and cycle time.


Leadership & Communication

  • Influencing Without Authority

  • Navigates BU/GIE/site dynamics; secures commitments; resolves conflicts.

  • Executive Communication & Storytelling with Data

  • One-page updates, dashboards, and decision narratives aligned to BU scorecards.

Minimum Education: 

  • B.S. in Engineering

Experience:

  • 5+ years experience in molding engineering discipline (process/tooling) is required

  • Experience with tooling of injection molds is required

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and understanding of Mold Flow Analysis tools is desired

  • Excellent technical skills including project management, organization, planning, and capital budgets relating to molding equipment procurement and verification.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply problem solving and data analysis methods.

  • Previous experience with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), ISO standards and Lean Manufacturing concepts desired.

  • Experience in an FDA regulated quality environment desired.

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%.

  • Experience leading projects end to end.

  • Strong communication skills Risk analysis / FMEA Statistical analysis / SPC system

  • Ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities, and to develop and maintain tool qualification schedules.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to use a laptop/computer for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours)

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time (up to 8 hours) in virtual and/or on-site meetings

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time (up to 8 hours) when conducting FAT, SAT, on-site equipment/process troubleshooting, etc.

  • Ability to climb steps, squat, etc.

  • Ability to work independently in a High Volume manufacturing floor

  • Follow Safety and Quality/GMP requirements for medical device manufacturing site (Safety shoes, safety glasses, hair net, beard net, face mask, hard hat, etc….as required per manufacturing site)
