Essential Duties and Position Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership & Team Management
- Lead and manage a team of packaging engineers, fostering professional growth, accountability, and collaboration.
- Define and execute packaging strategies that align with business goals, regulatory requirements, and market needs.
- Champion a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and operational excellence within the packaging function.
2. Technical Oversight & Innovation
- Provide technical direction for packaging design, material selection, and validation across sterile and non-sterile medical devices.
- Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in packaging technologies, guiding cross-functional teams in R&D, manufacturing, and quality.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and sustainability trends to enhance packaging performance and reduce environmental impact.
3. Design, Development & Documentation
- Oversee the development of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging solutions, ensuring manufacturability and compliance.
- Review and approve technical documentation including specifications, drawings, protocols, and reports as needed.
- Lead risk assessments, feasibility studies, and design reviews to support robust packaging solutions when necessary.
4. Testing, Validation & Compliance
- Ensure packaging validation activities meet ISO, ASTM, FDA, and internal quality standards.
- Guide the development of test plans including transit testing, shelf-life studies, and environmental conditioning.
- Support regulatory submissions with comprehensive technical documentation and data analysis.
5. Cross-Functional & External Collaboration
- Partner with Regulatory Affairs, Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Marketing to deliver packaging solutions that meet stakeholder requirements.
- Lead technology transfers and scale-up activities, including equipment selection and process validation.
- Manage relationships with external vendors, consultants, and contract manufacturers to ensure timely and cost-effective packaging development.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience in packaging
- At least 3 years in a people management role
- Proven expertise in packaging design, materials science, and validation methodologies
- Strong understanding of regulatory requirements for Class II and Class III medical devices
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop engineering teams
- Experience managing cross-functional projects and influencing stakeholders
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Proficiency in CAD tools, packaging test equipment, and documentation systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (Master's or higher) in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
- Experience specifically in medical device packaging
- Knowledge of sustainability trends in packaging
- Experience with sterile and non-sterile medical device packaging
- Background in technology transfers and scale-up activities
- Experience managing relationships with external vendors and contract manufacturers
