Opportunity: Vice President, Engineering, Advanced Patient Monitoring (APM)

Role Purpose

At BD, the Advanced Patient Monitoring (APM) R&D Organization is dedicated to delivering innovative products to our patients and customers and Advancing the World of Health.  As a member of the APM R&D Leadership Team, the Vice President, Engineering is a strategic and technical leader who will lead multiple technical functions within the organization.  These functions will include Electronics System Design and Embedded Software Development and potentially other R&D disciplines. As a senior leader within the R&D organization, this individual is responsible for driving innovation, development and execution of electronics and embedded software solutions across APM’s product portfolio and will be expected to act as a technical leader on one or more projects of varying levels of complexity. They will also represent the R&D Electronics and Embedded Software functions in the due diligence activities associated with M&A projects. 

This role will work collaboratively with other R&D functional organizations such as Algorithm Development, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering and Software Engineering to deliver value added innovation projects to the market. They will also work closely with the R&D Project Management Office to support the scheduling, controlling, reporting and risk management/mitigation of projects.

As part of delivering products to market, this leader will be expected to partner with cross functional leaders and resources across the business. This includes Marketing, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, Clinical and Medical Affairs, and Legal.

Additional responsibilities include strategic planning and budgeting, interaction and presentations with senior BD and APM leadership, talent acquisition, management and development and innovation pipeline management.

Job Functions

  • Direct activities of multiple functions in a high functioning entrepreneurial team through lower management levels while influencing overall strategic direction. Develop and execute a robust strategic talent development and succession plan in alignment with functional growth strategies across the global organization

  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of the operational processes, procedures and ways of working within the electronics and embedded software organizations.  This includes tool selection and review and updates of processes and procedures to stay current with technology and efficiency trends.  Ensure close technical partnership with the Mechanical and Algorithms Teams to ensure smooth product development and design continuity throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Plan and direct multiple strategic projects with the highest criticality, this includes developing timelines, assigning and managing resources, providing technical and design direction, managing cost and margin targets, mitigating risk, and coordinating the activities of all functional stakeholders, including, but not limited to Marketing, Quality, Regulatory, and Operations.

  • Analyze, formulate and present recommendations to advise and guide executive level leadership; develop and deliver executive level communication across functions that impact multiple areas of the business.  Participate in strategic management processes that drive the business; this includes, but is not limited to Annual Strategic Review, Budgeting, Talent Development Reviews, Quality and Operations Reviews and Innovation Portfolio Reviews.

  • Represent the R&D Organization during M&A activities.  This includes participating in early technology assessments, managing and conducting due diligence activities and planning, executing and managing integration activities.

Education/Experience

Candidates should ideally hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in an engineering field, or alternatively an MBA. While these educational qualifications are preferred. However, a minimum of 15 years of experience is essential, with a proven track record in management of technical and/or engineering disciplines is required.

Experience in working in a regulated industry, preferably Medical Device is required.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Proven success as a senior engineering leader, with 15+ years of progressive experience leading large engineering teams in electronics engineering and embedded software development teams

  • Demonstrated ability to lead large-scale initiatives for complex electro-mechanical medical devices with embedded software components

  • Leadership experience with increasing level of responsibility, including managing multiple functional disciplines in engineering

  • Experience with M&A processes and activities, including due diligence and integration

  • Proven successful project management leadership skills

  • Proven expertise in both Microsoft Office Suite and related systems

  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills including high discretion/judgment in decision making

  • Excellent documentation and communication skills and interpersonal relationship skills including negotiating and relationship management skills with ability to drive achievement of objectives

  • Expert understanding engineering procedures with extensive and detailed knowledge allowing for innovative concepts and promoting new ideas

  • Expert understanding of related aspects of engineering processes and/or systems

  • Expert knowledge of financial mechanisms that relates to engineering

  • Ability to develop and integrate metrics into the projects and operations that clearly demonstrate the value of engineering to the business

  • Serve as core partner to senior leaders in Business Units, Functional Groups, and Regions

  • Strict attention to detail

  • Ability to interact professionally with all organizational levels

  • Ability to work and excel within a fast-paced, dynamic, and constantly changing work environment

  • Ability to interact internally and externally with executive level management, requiring negotiation of extremely critical matters; influences policymaking

  • Ability to provide leadership and direction to large cross-functional teams to successfully implement project goals

  • Develop relationships and leverage them to influence change

  • Support and solicit input from team members at all levels within the organization

The employee in this position has the authority to hire and terminate other employees, or effectively recommend the same, and is responsible for completing performance reviews for each of the employees supervised.
