Job Summary:
The Senior Director of Engineering will provide leadership, functional management, and coordination for all development activities related to BD Biosciences flow cytometry instrumentation platforms (cell sorters and analyzers). This leader will oversee a large cross-functional team spanning multiple engineering disciplines including hardware (mechanical, fluidics, optics), firmware and embedded software, electrical, and systems engineering. This role guides the team through the complete product lifecycle: technology development, product development, manufacturing transfer, and post-launch sustaining activities for BD Biosciences' flow instrumentation worldwide. The Senior Director will ensure world-class technical standards, alignment of technical decisions with long-term business priorities, and delivery of products that meet customer needs while exceeding expectations for performance and quality. Reporting directly to the Worldwide Vice President of R&D, this position participates as a member of the BDB R&D Leadership Team and will lead an R&D function of more than 60 associates worldwide
Job Responsibilities:(Primary Duties, Roles, and/or Authorities)
Set the vision for a world-class life sciences Engineering team and develop strategic/tactical plans and roadmaps
Work closely with program managers to ensure proper resourcing and expertise for each product development team
Attract, recruit, retain, and develop top talent to build best-in-class capabilities
Collaborate with R&D Leadership team members to drive strategic objectives of R&D and broader business
Interact with senior functional leaders across departments to ensure systems under development meet overall business needs
Manage within defined budgetary boundaries
Address complex problems requiring in-depth evaluation of various factors
Introduce and institutionalize valuable engineering and lean practices
Model best-in-class Engineering functional excellence
Oversee Engineering processes and methodologies, ensuring consistent application and continuous improvement
Establish departmental priorities to meet program objectives, monitoring cost/schedule/staffing/performance
Participate in Design and Technical Reviews to ensure customer needs are satisfied
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science, Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, Physics, or related field
Minimum 8 years' experience in a functional leadership role and/or leading multidisciplinary Engineering teams
Minimum 5 years of product development experience in instrumentation for life sciences applications or related fields of similar regulatory complexity
Minimum 3 years of relevant industry experience in a regulated environment
Demonstrated team management and leadership skills for complex programs
Significant technical expertise in one or more of the following: Flow cytometry, Fluorescence microscopy, Spectroscopy, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics
Up-to-date engineering skills and product development knowledge
Experience with Design Control in a regulated environment
Knowledge of Quality Systems Regulations, ISO guidelines, and Good Laboratory Practices
Experience with system development lifecycles and requirements development for complex systems
Ability to manage departmental budget, resources, and assignments across multiple programs
Effective organization, planning, and interpersonal skills
Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in a relevant engineering or scientific field
Direct experience in design and development of complex instrumentation and systems in the life sciences industry
Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI) of complex biomedical instrumentation, ideally flow cytometry
Experience in a start-up environment
Education and/or experience in Immunology, Cell Biology, or related scientific field
Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) training and qualifications
Experience working in a highly matrixed organization
Experience with tools for managing customer, system, and subsystem level requirements
