Position Summary

The Senior Director will lead all aspects of new product development and sustaining activities within the MMS R&D organization. This strategic and technical leadership role is responsible for driving business growth through innovative product development and effective portfolio management. Reporting to the Vice President of Product Development – Infusion Systems, R&D, this individual will coordinate complex programs with global impact, requiring enterprise thinking, strategic influence, and deep development expertise.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead end-to-end product development cycles for medical devices.
  • Deliver technical leadership and address intricate problems with nimbleness.
  • Develop and implement R&D tools, processes, standards, and metrics.
  • Build and manage the infusion R&D portfolio, ensuring alignment with BD MMS strategy.
  • Active contributor to innovation pipeline and management of R&D portfolio budget.
  • Drive and lead innovative problem resolution at an accelerated pace.
  • Deliver technical direction, showcasing the skill to delve deeply into technical matters.
  • Work in a development environment which supports both organic and inorganic development opportunities.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Marketing, Regulatory, Operations, Finance, and Commercial teams.
  • Drive consistent portfolio processes, tools, and important metrics to monitor execution and guide decision-making.
  • Translate business strategy into product development priorities through portfolio shaping and scenario planning.
  • Facilitate executive reviews with clear narratives and decision-ready recommendations.
  • Contribute to technology strategy, capacity planning, and organizational efficiency.
  • Promote a culture of ownership, psychological safety, and disciplined execution.

Education Qualifications & Previous Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Systems, Electrical, Biomedical, Software, or related field) required; Master’s, MBA, or PhD or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Over 15 years of progressive experience in R&D technical engineering positions, excelling in product development and quality management systems.
  • Regulated industry experience (FDA, Automotive, Industrial, etc.).
  • Experience leading a team of multi-disciplinary engineers.
  • Project management experience for complex systems.
  • Strong business acuity and customer centricity.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, analytical skills, and financial competence.
  • Experienced in mentoring and building high-performing leadership teams.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with executive presence.
  • Ability to lead through ambiguity and foster resilience under pressure.
  • Strong business insight and customer-focused attitude.
  • High emotional intelligence with the ability to build trust, encourage teams, and navigate complex interpersonal dynamics.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution, active listening, and constructive feedback.
  • Collaborative approach with a passion for empowering teams and practicing inclusive leadership.
  • Adaptability and openness to change in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Dedication to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10–20% (domestic and international).
