The Director, Marketing Innovation – Surgical Solutions is responsible for leading the upstream marketing efforts focused on new product innovation across the Biosurgery and Infection Prevention, which is part of the BD Surgery Business Unit within the Interventional Segment.

This role is a critical leadership role on a high growth platform. This leader will be responsible for partnering with the VP/GM in developing and delivering upon the innovation strategy, organic and inorganic, to drive both short- and long-term growth opportunities. The Platform’s focus is reducing surgical complications through innovative technologies and services to address the unmet needs of the healthcare providers and patients we serve.

This individual will manage and contribute meaningfully to the short and long-term growth of the Surgical Solutions Platform and will be called upon to demonstrate expertise and leadership in all aspects of portfolio development. As such, high-potential candidates should have strong leadership qualities and competency. This individual with have direct people leadership responsibilities and be leading efforts among strong cross functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and upskills team on standard processes and takeaways related to new product development

  • Helps establish the short-term and long-term direction and strategies for the business platform, in collaboration with Platform and Regional leadership

  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of phase gate new product development process, front end innovation to launch, including gathering and categorizing unmet needs, formulating target product profiles (TPP), developing evidence generation plans to deliver on TPP

  • Skilled at gathering market intelligence and trends, technology development, current and emerging clinical needs, and white space opportunities and conducting competitive scenario playing to model potential responses and impact

  • Conducts market research in a variety of methodologies (technologies, procedures, competitive positions, pricing, segmentation, positioning, etc.) to identify unmet needs, with a heavy emphasis on mapping patient journeys and clinical pathways through surgical procedure case observations

  • Supports the analysis of market research to develop comprehensive New Product Development (NPD) strategy and the validation of User Needs to support a commercialization strategy

  • Leads identification and selection of the most promising business innovation opportunities (both organic and in-organic) for the platform

  • Effectively partners and collaborates with regional business leaders, R&D, Medical Affairs, Business Development, and other functions to ensure development and execution/profession of both key early stage and GPDS innovation projects

  • Prepares and presents new business opportunities to senior leaders based on detailed financial analysis, market opportunity, revenue potential, IP, and technological assessment

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • BS/BA in business, science, marketing, or health care is required

  • MBA with concentration in marketing or finance preferred

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in product and/or market management

  • Track record of delivering upon strategic and financial objectives in roles of increasing responsibility

  • Experience in developing and driving innovation initiatives

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams; experience managing direct reports is ideal

  • Medical device industry experience

  • Skilled at business and financial analysis

  • Strategic problem solver with a growth mindset and strong influencing skills

  • Highly self-motivated, execution and results-focused leader with the ability to thrive in fast-paced environment and shape the strategic direction of the business

  • Brings a methodical and structured approach to work, ensuring consistency and reliability

  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

  • Strong action-orientation with ability to effectively prioritize and multi-task to balance diverse needs of the business

  • Highly analytical with ability to follow the dynamic changes within the market and identify key trends and opportunities for accelerated growth

  • Strong customer orientation with ability to effectively understand unmet needs by team member to inform a solid fact base and strategic focus of the business

  • Ability to make recommendations to senior leaders based on the assessment of the financial opportunity, IP, medical need, associated risks, and potential for both short-term and long-term revenue generation

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and persuasion skills; the ability to understand and communicate effectively with individuals from a broad range of business and technical subject areas and an ability to influence and inspire these groups to achieve the program objectives

  • Creative and results-oriented problem solver who demonstrates logical basis for recommendations

  • Good understanding of P&L, distribution channels and go-to-market strategies

  • An ability to have a consistent, positive, motivating influence on the performance of those individuals with whom they work with and/or manage

  • Ability to travel approximately 25%
