Job Description Summary

BD is seeking a Summer Environmental Intern to support our Environmental, Health, Safety & Sustainability (EHS&S) organization with a focus on community engagement and environmental permitting and compliance tracking across BD’s U.S. manufacturing and distribution sites.
This role offers hands-on experience supporting BD’s commitment to environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance, and community partnership, while gaining exposure to environmental programs within a global medical technology company.
The intern will collaborate with corporate and site level EHS professionals and contribute to initiatives that support BD’s purpose of advancing the world of health™ through responsible operations.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement & Environmental Stewardship

  • Support BD environmental and sustainability related community engagement initiatives at U.S. manufacturing and distribution sites.

  • Assist with tracking and documenting community outreach activities, including site communications, community meetings, and engagement programs.

  • Help prepare presentation materials, summaries, and talking points for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Support documentation of community feedback, concerns, and commitments related to environmental performance.

Environmental Permitting & Compliance Support

  • Assist in maintaining and updating a centralized inventory of environmental permits and reporting obligations (e.g., air, water, waste) for BD U.S. sites.

  • Track permit expiration dates, reporting deadlines, and renewal requirements.

  • Support coordination with site EHS teams to collect permit documentation and confirm compliance status.

  • Help organize environmental records to support internal audits, regulatory inspections, and compliance reviews.

  • Participate in supporting sites with ISO 14001 certification compliance.

Data Management & Reporting

  • Enter and validate environmental and compliance data in tracking tools, spreadsheets, or EHS management systems.

  • Assist with basic data analysis and development of summaries or dashboards for EHS leadership.

  • Support preparation of internal reports related to environmental compliance and community engagement.

General EHS&S Support

  • Participate in EHS&S team meetings, training sessions, and site calls.

  • Support special environmental or sustainability projects aligned with BD’s 2030+ sustainability goals.

  • Gain exposure to BD’s environmental management systems, governance processes, and regulatory frameworks.

Qualifications

Required

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, Public Health, or related field.

  • Interest in environmental compliance, sustainability, and community engagement.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a professional environment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

  • Coursework or experience related to environmental regulations (air, water, waste).

  • Familiarity with EHS, ESG, or sustainability concepts.

  • Experience with data tracking, reporting, or EHS management systems.

  • Interest in manufacturing, distribution, or regulated industrial operations.

Additional Information

  • This is a summer only internship with no expectation of travel.

  • Work will be on-site in Franklin Lakes, NJ.

By the end of the summer internship, the Environmental Intern is expected to have developed foundational knowledge and practical skills in the following areas:

Environmental Compliance & Permitting

  • Understand the purpose and structure of key U.S. environmental permits applicable to manufacturing and distribution operations (e.g., air, water, waste).

  • Learn how environmental permits are tracked, maintained, and renewed within a large, regulated organization.

  • Gain familiarity with BD’s environmental compliance framework, including roles of corporate and site EHS teams.

Community Engagement & Stakeholder Awareness

  • Understand the role of community engagement in supporting BD’s environmental stewardship and social responsibility commitments.

  • Learn how environmental information is communicated to internal and external stakeholders, including local communities.

  • Develop awareness of how community feedback and concerns are documented, evaluated, and addressed.

Data Management & Governance

  • Build skills in organizing, validating, and maintaining environmental data and documentation.

  • Learn how accurate data supports regulatory compliance, audits, and management decision making.

  • Gain experience using spreadsheets or EHS tracking tools to support environmental programs.

Professional & Organizational Skills

  • Develop professional communication skills through written summaries, presentations, and team interactions.

  • Strengthen collaboration skills by working with cross-functional and site-based EHS partners.

  • Build an understanding of BD’s EHS&S culture, governance, and continuous improvement mindset.

The intern’s success will be evaluated using the following clear, objective criteria:

Community Engagement Support

  • ✅ Completion and organization of community engagement tracking materials or summaries.

  • ✅ Timely and accurate documentation of outreach activities or stakeholder interactions.

  • ✅ Quality of presentation materials or communications prepared for EHS or site leadership.

Environmental Permitting & Compliance Tracking

  • ✅ Accurate entry and maintenance of environmental permit data for assigned U.S. sites.

  • ✅ Identification and flagging of upcoming permit expirations, renewals, or reporting deadlines.

  • ✅ Completeness and organization of permit documentation provided to the EHS team.

Data Quality & Reliability

  • ✅ Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and recordkeeping.

  • ✅ Responsiveness to feedback and corrections related to data quality.

  • ✅ Ability to explain the purpose and use of tracked environmental data.

Professional Performance

  • ✅ Consistent on time completion of assigned tasks and deliverables.

  • ✅ Active participation in team meetings, training sessions, and discussions.

  • ✅ Demonstration of BD leadership behaviors, including integrity, collaboration, and accountability.

Learning & Engagement

  • ✅ Demonstrated understanding of basic environmental compliance concepts by end of internship.

  • ✅ Willingness to ask questions, seek feedback, and apply learning to assigned work.

  • A brief summary report or presentation outlining:

    • Key activities completed

    • Lessons learned about environmental permitting and community engagement
