Job Description Summary

The Sr. Engineer provides leadership and resources to explore, develop & bring new products to the Holdrege facility and works and in partnership with the team to improve existing processes and operations. The Sr. Engineer is responsible for the repair and maintenance of the automated material handling equipment as well as the sterilization vault. Must be able to troubleshoot and diagnose robotics and material handling equipment malfunctions and make necessary repairs and/or improvements. Responsible for department process and system design, capital equipment acquisition, installation of equipment and validation support for projects. Provides leadership and training to less senior technical personnel involved in the support of the automated equipment. Sr. Engineer will also provide oversight and support for the Facilities Team.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Project Management:

  • Lead projects to reduce cost, increase efficiency, improve safety, or improve machine capabilities from conception through to completion.

  • Manage and coordinate project timelines, team meetings, project reviews, project budgets, equipment installations and validations.

  • Effectively communicate project requirements, goals and timelines to plant management

  • Act as a vendor liaison for the purchase, design, fabrication, installation, and validation of custom high speed automation equipment.

  • Provide problem solving, cost analysis, testing, validation, design, and equipment repair support.

  • Work closely with the Sterilization Team Leader to coordinate work activities of the technical associates and relay any performance issues of the technical associates who have a solid reporting line to the team lead.

  • Coordination of source loading and unloading.

  • Assist in writing capital requests and developing departmental budgets Support department and plant validation leads in department validations including FAT, IQ, OQ and PQ.

  • Develop recommendations for process optimization, cycle time reduction and lead time reductions Apply principles and theories of electronics, electrical circuitry, engineering mathematics, electronic and electrical testing.

  • Coordinate maintenance activities including emergency maintenance, preventative maintenance, total productive maintenance, time-based maintenance and any other projects to ensure the sterilizer and automated equipment is in good operating condition.

  • Minimize quality risks due to mechanical malfunctions. This includes maintaining systems so that substandard product is not processed.

Engineering Support:

  • Brainstorm, research, design and test new processes, technologies and equipment.

  • Collaborate on equipment designs with outside vendors and other BD engineers.

  • Produce CAD models and prints using AutoCAD, Inventor, and/or SolidWorks software.

  • Prepare comprehensive machine specifications for use in the fabrication and purchase of new equipment.

  • Ensure equipment is delivered within specification and on schedule and coordinate installation and start up.

  • Create work instructions and quality documentation for new processes and equipment.

  • Provide engineering support through cost analysis, testing, equipment design, equipment repair and problem solving.

  • Perform acceptance testing for newly purchased equipment.

  • Develop/maintain/read electrical and mechanical schematics to resolve both electronic and mechanical issues.

General:

  • Support the control of the Radiation Safety Program as a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).

  • Support compliance to Nebraska Title 180 Control on Ionizing Radiation.

  • Assist with FDA, ISO and NRC audits. In the event of prolonged downtime or a radiation emergency, be able to advise the Chief RSO of the nature and duration of the problem or emergency and take proper action.

  • Serve as a backup for the technical team when support is needed. May require coming in off-shift.
    Communicate in an effective, timely and appropriate manner to all associates (le. peers, support teams and management) including escalating issues.

  • Obey all company policies, standards and rules, including but not limited to: Safety policies and rules including lockout procedures); Quality policies and rules.

  • Must maintain regular, punctual attendance.

Supervision:

  • Supervise and direct the engineering staff, liaison with facilities maintenance, and the plant Leadership Team. This position supports all facets of sterilization and facilities within the Holdrege facility.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical/manufacturing engineering (BSME or BSEE preferred), required.

Experience:

  • Application of QSR to new and modified operations / procedures.

  • Minimum of five years of engineering experience in manufacturing.

  • Equipment design experience.

  • 2+ Years’ experience with programing of Fanuc or similar robots, preferred.

  • Radiation Certification - Must be able to acquire in 12 months. This job is contingent on clearing an FBI background check. You will be required to provide fingerprints to be sent to the FBI. The corporate security officer will determine if the background information will be acceptable for this position.

Physical Demands:

Work Environment (if applicable):

  • High speed manufacturing environment. Must remain alert and focused.

  • No air-conditioning in parts of sterilization/warehouse area.

  • May have intermittent exposure to chemicals.

  • Degree of exposure to dust, dirt, heat, fumes, noise, vibration and chemicals.

  • When working outside, any & all physical elements of weather & temperature may be present.

  • Safety glasses, safety shoes and high visibility gear must be worn when in the warehouse and Sterilization

  • Some physical exertion, including lifting, may be required.
