This position works cross-functionally to lead research and development efforts of complex medical devices. The position designs, develops and implements new products, focusing on project planning, innovative medical device design, prototype development, testing characterization, analysis and reporting. This is a high impact individual with a demonstrated ability to design elements of a product from concept to proven commercial success.
The Peripheral Intervention (PI) business unit at BD offers a comprehensive range of medical products, devices, and services for the treatment of peripheral arterial and venous disease, cancer detection, and end-stage renal disease and maintenance. The Oncology platform is a key business within the Peripheral Intervention (PI) business unit. The Oncology business is committed to driving innovation and is investing in opportunities that will propel the diagnosis, treatment, and care of cancer patients towards the future. This position works cross-functionally to lead research and development efforts of complex medical devices within our Oncology portfolio.
This job description is intended as a summary of the primary responsibilities of and qualifications for this position. Job Responsibilities
Design: Designs, develops and implements new products and processes of a medical device, translating intangible design inputs into tangible engineering specifications and drawings. Makes and presents engineering decisions.
New Product Design: Successfully delivered on new product design and development activities resulting in technical/design output (e.g. in vivo performance) success on commercial launch.
Analytical Models: Creates analytical models for simulation of design alternatives of components and assemblies. Models may include linear and non-linear material models and contact. Ensures that design related activities are completed on-time in support of program goals.
Process Development: Develops new processes by understanding key process inputs and outputs, using statistic methods such as DOE as appropriate. Develops new process equipment and tooling, including specification development, vendor selection and negotiation.
Documentation: Writes and reviews product development plans, design reviews, technical documents and reports. Prepares and approves verification and validation protocols and reports. Develops and implements procedures/policy.
Test Method Development: Develops new engineering test methods and clinically relevant simulated use test methods in conjunction with R&D technicians; prepares and assists in the validation of test methods.
Supervisory/mentoring/coaching: Mentors/coaches R&D technicians and engineers through New Product Development activities. May supervise or manage technicians, engineers or supervisors. Trains technicians and engineers on new design and process development as well as new test methods.
Fiscal: Creates, controls, manages a project budget (expense and/or capital expenditure). Creates and critiques engineering cost analysis.
Technical Support: Provides technical support on components, materials, methods, systems, and equipment.
Education and Experience Required:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering or other related engineering discipline.
Experience: 7-10 years of industrial experience in R&D, preferably in medical device or other regulated FDA/QSR and ISO environment (Master's degree plus 5-7 years or Ph.D. degree with 4-5 years, medical device or equivalent industry experience).
Ability to travel up to 10-25% of the time to other BD sites, conferences, or training events.
Knowledge and skills:
Demonstrated hands-on technical aptitude.
Working knowledge of various materials typically used in medical devices, preference for experience with resorbable polymers and other biomaterials
Competent tooling, design and drafting knowledge..
Ability to analyze data, interpret results, and write reports. Proficient in statistic software.
Prototype development experience including rapid prototyping.
Experience with specifying medical grade materials.
Ability to create technical drawings and implement GD&T per ASME Y14.5
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in relevant engineering discipline.
Experience with chemistry, biomaterials design and analysis, analytical chemistry, resorbable implants, and/or hydrogel synthesis strongly preferred
Knowledge of cGMP and GLP is a plus.
Ability to lead cross functional teams.
Design of injection molding components and assemblies.
FDA Quality System Requirements and GMP experience.
Equipment and tooling design experience.
Familiarity with AutoCAD.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use sight, and use hands to manipulate, handle or feel objects, tools, controls, and equipment. The employee frequently is required to verbally communicate with other associates. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel or crouch.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be in an open cubicle environment. Candidate must be able to work in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment. Salary ranges have been implemented to reward associates fairly and competitively, as well as to support recognition of associates’ progress, ranging from entry level to experts in their field, and talent mobility. There are many factors, such as location, that contribute to the range displayed. The salary offered to a successful candidate is based on experience, education, skills, and actual work location. Salary ranges may vary for Field-based and Remote roles.
Salary: $113,400.00 - 186,900.00 USD Annual plus incentives.
