Champ Davis can easily and quickly describe BD in one word: impactful. But after speaking with him for any length of time, it’s clear that he values his career at the company for so many additional reasons.

“One of the things I love about BD is the level of accountability that everyone here holds themselves to. Everyone owns their space, their role, their business, how they show up to work. The culture here allows me to engage more, do more to support the business cross functionally, and keep applying a growth mindset to all I do,” said Champ.

As a Regional Business Manager for Integrated Diagnostic Solutions (IDS), Champ supports the BD Veritor^TM Point of Care Testing portfolio and BD’s Inside Sales Development Program. Prior to taking on his current role, he served as a Care Continuum Account Executive for Medication Management Solutions (MMS) supporting the IV Fluid portfolio.

BD is a place where purpose and possibilities thrive

Champ emphasizes there are no two days that are alike when working at BD. Most days and weeks are spent supporting internal meetings and touchpoints across the business, as well as supporting customers in new care settings. And then there is a third area that he has grown more passionate about over his five years with BD: extracurricular efforts. He joined the African Americans at BD Associate Resource Group (AABD ARG) in 2022. He recently participated in a successful pilot around career coaching that he is leading this year.

“I believe deeply in supporting diversity and inclusion efforts at BD and know the Career Coaching effort is going to be a great way to help support the development of associates even more – the reality is there are so many opportunities at BD,” said Champ.

Former Hawkeye Fullback loves connecting with others

Champ faced the question of “What will I do after graduating from college?” during his time at the University of Iowa several years ago. His head coach helped to set up a meet-and-greet in Chicago with a representative of a med tech company and, soon after, found himself relocating to San Jose, CA to serve as a Marketing Associate. Champ also has experience in sales and go-to-market strategy with a couple of start-ups, but believes his role at BD may just be the most impactful one yet.

“I really love the challenge of entering new markets with reliable BD products, the culture and collaboration across BD, and I especially love when I get an opportunity to engage with people in the healthcare space through my customer base,” he said.

Some general advice Champ would give to others about what it takes to work at BD: never be afraid to take calculated risks, take advantage of BD’s collegial and collaborative culture, and work hard to achieve your goals.

Dad Leaves Inspiring Legacy

Champ points to his dad as someone who has been influential – and an inspiration to him – from both a personal and professional perspective.

“My dad was a people leader in various industries, and we moved around a lot with his promotions. He always had such great wisdom to share. He had this no-nonsense, go-get-it-done type of attitude. He emphasized betting on yourself, and showing up in a way that others want to work with you. During the last conversation I had with him, he really challenged me to think about what’s next at BD and how I can make a greater impact. It made me reflect on my career experiences, the effort invested into two companies acquired by BD (CareFusion and Velano Vascular), and the positive impact I’ve made on the people I’ve worked with and for. I only wish I could have continued the conversation with him, but he did inspire me to better leverage my networking skills to grow my career at BD,” said Champ.

Sadly, Champ’s father passed away in December 2022 from pancreatic cancer. He personally witnessed the positive impact BD products had on his father’s cancer journey. He knows that he now serves as the father-figure to his three younger sisters, and is someone who his mother can lean on for help and support. “It’s a role I cherish for sure,” he said.

While the future still holds a realm of possibilities for Champ, with his positive attitude, growth mindset and willingness to support others, there’s no doubt he will leave a legacy as equally as powerful as his dad’s.
