Job Responsibilities

The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Site Leader (JG5) is responsible for strategic and operational leadership of all site Environmental, Health, and Safety programs, ensuring full and sustained compliance with all applicable local, state, federal, and BD corporate regulatory requirements.

This role serves as the senior site authority and subject matter expert (SME) for EH&S and is accountable for establishing a robust safety culture, regulatory excellence, risk mitigation, and continuous improvement across the site. The EHS Site Leader partners with site and enterprise leadership to integrate EH&S requirements into business strategy, plant management systems, and daily operations, with a strong focus on injury prevention, environmental stewardship, and operational resilience.

The position requires demonstrated ability to lead leaders, manage and develop EH&S organizations, influence executive stakeholders, and represent the site with regulatory agencies and corporate governance bodies.

(Primary Duties, Roles, and/or Authorities)

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide senior leadership and governance for all site EH&S programs, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable regulatory entities, as well as BD corporate policies, standards, and management systems.
  • Serve as the site’s primary EH&S authority and regulatory representative, leading interactions with external regulatory agencies and corporate governance teams.
  • Lead, manage, and develop the site EH&S organization, including succession planning, capability development, performance management, and alignment with BD people‑leadership expectations.
  • Establish and execute site EH&S strategy and multiyear improvement plans, aligned with business objectives and enterprise EH&S priorities.
  • Integrate EH&S requirements into the plant management system, ensuring risk‑based decision‑making is embedded into operations, engineering, and capital planning.
  • Provide expert oversight of environmental compliance programs, including air, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous waste, chemical management, and all required permitting and reporting.
  • Ensure all environmental permits, licenses, inspections, and regulatory submissions are accurate, timely, and defensible.
  • Oversee occupational safety, industrial hygiene, emergency response, and contractor safety programs, ensuring risks are proactively identified and mitigated.
  • Provide executive‑level oversight of occupational health programs, including medical surveillance, workers’ compensation, wellness initiatives, and PHI compliance.
  • Lead investigations of significant EH&S incidents, regulatory findings, and near‑miss events; ensure effective root cause analysis and sustainable corrective actions.  Lead site emergency response strategy and crisis management readiness.   
  • Sponsor and oversee internal and external audits, including regulatory inspections and ISO‑based assessments, ensuring closure of findings and systemic improvements.
  • Establish and monitor leading and lagging EH&S performance metrics, using data and analytics to drive continuous improvement and risk reduction.
  • Champion a strong safety culture, influencing leaders and associates to demonstrate visible ownership and accountability for EH&S performance.
  • Support enterprise EH&S initiatives, best‑practice sharing, and cross‑site collaboration.
  • Champion site Sustainability improvements to align with Enterprise initiatives and goals.   
  • Other duties as required to support the needs of the business.

Education and Experience

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical), Industrial Hygiene, or a related technical discipline.

Preferred:

  • Advanced or professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or equivalent.
  • ISO 14001 and/or ISO 45001 lead auditor experience.
  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt.

Minimum Experience:

  • 8–10 years of progressive EH&S experience in a regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading EH&S teams and influencing senior site leadership.
  • Proven experience managing complex regulatory programs and agency interactions.
  • Experience in medical device, pharmaceutical, chemical, or similarly regulated industries preferred.
