The BD Excellence Director North America will be responsible to drive the adoption and execution of the BD Excellence vision and strategy in North America to support structured growth and innovation across various business and functional areas.

This position is a key partner in our journey to BD Excellence, acting as reference and advisor to the North America Leadership Team (NALT) and will support the leadership team in leading the Continuous Improvement process, with emphasis on visual management, problem solving and kaizen and will assist in deploying of strategic plans, ensuring alignment through cascading Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) top-down and bottom-up.  This position is responsible for delivering and coaching BD Excellence across the North America Business Units and Functions.

Key Responsibilities

BD Excellence Strategy Development and Deployment:

  • Lead the development and alignment of the BD Excellence vision and strategy in North America to support structured growth and innovation across various business and functional areas, with a primary focus on the deployment of the BD Excellence commercial tools and processes that will drive best-in-class sales effectiveness.

  • In close alignment with the North America Commercial Excellence organization, support the deployment of the BD Excellence commercial toolbox and standardized methodologies to drive results and deliver increased sales effectiveness and tool adoption.

  • Support the leadership team in deploying of strategic plans, ensuring alignment through cascading Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) top-down and bottom-up.

  • Use bowlers, key performance indicators, and action plans to drive prioritization and rigor based on clear metrics

  • Support the EVP President North America and NALT in driving key initiatives through BD Excellence, including revenue growth, Gross Profit Improvement and Operational Profit.

  • Develop and facilitate continuous improvement (Kaizen) events to achieve and sustain improvement results.

  • Partner with the global BD Excellence Central Leadership Team to facilitate best-practice sharing, driving efficiency and impact in the strong execution of BD Excellence tools and processes.

Leading Change through BD Excellence initiatives:

  • Drive BD Excellence programs and initiatives to achieve long-term continuous improvement objectives through top-down alignments and cross BU / Function resources.

  • Be a change champion in the deployment of BD Excellence in North America and in the tools and mindset across the region.

  • Challenge existing paradigms, encourage and promote internal and external best practice; Drive collaboration within business unit and functions to accept new ideas and achieve sustainable business improvements.

  • Lead digitalization and innovation efforts at organization level to improve the business and operation excellence and customer experience.

  • Organize the annual process to identify opportunities and lead the cross BU/functions virtual team to develop goals and action plan.

Cultivate BD Excellence culture and Capability Development:

  • Develop and grow capability through cross BU/function teams to establish the fundamentals of excellence from all aspects, e.g. business development, customer service, channel manager and commercial operation.

  • Equip the North America Leadership Team with BD Excellence concepts and knowledge, focusing on external and internal benchmarking.

  • Be an expert (can teach and execute) in the BD Excellence fundamentals of Visual Management (VM)/ Daily Management (DM), Problem Solving Process (PSP), Kaizen and Funnel Management. 

  • Drive culture of continuous improvement by encouraging associates to identify inefficiencies and suggest improvements. Foster an environment where associates feel valued and empowered to give feedback and make change.

  • Use methodologies like Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen to structure these efforts

  • Design and implement programs or initiatives to raise the awareness, adopt CI methodologies, and enhance capabilities of BD Excellence.

Education

University bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering or a related field is required.

MBA or equivalent business experience preferred.

Experiences

  • Ten (10) years of increasingly responsible experience in Sales and Marketing Leadership roles.

  • Five (5)+ years of Commercial Experience with a proven track record of driving processes to achieve results, ideally with experience as a sales rep, sales leader, and in commercial operations.

  • Preferably five (5) years relevant experience in the medical devices, clinical diagnostics and capital equipment markets. 

  • Advanced knowledge of Process and Lean techniques in a commercial setting.

  • Significant career experience in an organization where a business system is part of the culture and the core tools of visual management, problem solving, kaizen are embedded in all aspects of the business.  Strong knowledge of lean and six sigma business systems is preferred.  Certified practitioner in lean tools is highly desirable.

  • Excellent facilitation & communication skills both in person and virtually.  Ability to hold individual’s attention, create excitement, and hold all team members responsible for outcomes

  • Change champion. Ability to drive culture and change. BD Excellence is new to BD and North America and this individual will need to drive the change management journey

  • Ability to gain followership and drive results.

  • Positive attitude and ability to work closely with entire leadership team to drive change, continuous improvement, and engagement throughout the organization

  • The capacity to plan, organize, & complete projects on time. Excellent project management skills and ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and deadlines

  • Ability to lead teams and drive change in a matrix organization with experience working in managing large-scale projects and leading cross-functional teams. In a multi-site and multi-cultural environment is preferred.

  • Entrepreneurial mindset. Individual who can drive progress with limited oversight.

  •  Action oriented individual who is highly proactive at solving problems and obtaining results.

  • True love of continuous improvement, measuring results, and problem solving Demonstrated success in driving business impact through CI and Kaizen initiatives, particularly in a commercial organization and under fast-changing environment.

Preferred Knowledge and Experience

  • Strong understanding of the North America regulation, market and business environment and BD commercial and operation excellence Principle, frameworks and methodologies.

  • Experience working in a highly matrixed organization and in overcoming ambiguity in large-scale organizational change efforts.

  • View the business from a high-level perspective while adapting to fast-changing environments, demonstrating flexible strategic planning and execution skills. Ensure the focus of resources and time on priorities.

In addition, this person should also possess:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills with the ability to build a coalition of support from stakeholders and successfully drive change in matrix environment with multiple stakeholders.

  • Ability to translate strategic direction into execution – action orientation and drive for results coupled with a true “hands on” mindset 

  • Dynamic and engaging presence with the ability to motivate others and operate with strong personal integrity.

  • Systems thinking approach for effective problem solving required.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required, c.50-70%.
