Job Description
The EHS and Product Stewardship Lead is responsible for designing, implementing, sustaining, and continuously improving environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs while ensuring compliance with Canadian regulatory requirements and supporting the safe and sustainable management of products throughout their lifecycle.
The EHS and Product Stewardship Lead combines deep technical expertise with strong program ownership and strategic oversight to minimize risk, strengthen regulatory compliance, and build a sustainable, prevention‑focused safety culture across BD Canada. Based in our Mississauga ON offices Monday through Thursday, WFH Fridays, this role collaborates cross‑functionally with Integrated Supply Chain, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Human Resources, and Global EHS teams to drive EHS and Product Stewardship excellence across office, field, and remote environments, conduct workplace and product risk assessments, support product safety initiatives, and drive compliance with environmental and occupational health standards.
Job Responsibilities:
EHS Program Implementation & Oversight
- Design, implement, sustain, and continuously improve Canadian EHS programs in compliance with federal and provincial legislation (e.g., WHMIS, CEPA, OHSA, CNESST).
- Maintain and periodically review the Canadian EHS plan and compliance calendar, ensuring regulatory obligations are clearly defined and control owners complete required actions.
- Serve as the Subject Matter Expert for Canadian federal, provincial, and local EHS regulatory compliance.
- Own incident management processes, including investigation, escalation, corrective action tracking, and regulatory notifications, as applicable.
- Lead internal audits, inspections, and assessments to proactively identify risks and drive continuous improvement.
- Own and continuously improve preventive EHS programs, including digital incident and near‑miss reporting systems, escalation protocols, and follow‑through on corrective actions.
- Lead the development of a proactive, prevention‑focused safety culture, using structured programs (e.g., near‑miss / “Good Saves”) to identify hazards early and reinforce safe behaviors.
- Partner cross functionally to ensure Canadian EHS programs address regulatory obligations related to employee wellbeing, workplace conduct, and psychosocial risk, including province specific requirements (e.g., Quebec).
- Incorporate psychosocial hazard considerations into the Canadian EHS risk management framework and preventive programs, aligned with evolving regulatory and workplace risk expectations.
- Provide leadership and governance oversight for Canadian EHS forums and committees to support regulatory alignment, issue escalation, and leadership engagement across provinces.
EHS Operational, Field & Remote Workforce Support
- Own EHS oversight across a multi-site, national scope, including Canadian Head Office; Quebec satellite office; Field based employees (including driving/fleet and hospital or customer site activities); Remote and home-based employees, including implementation of virtual ergonomic assessments; the development, delivery, and tracking of EHS training programs
- Pay special attention to employees working across multiple provinces, ensuring alignment with applicable provincial legislation and regulatory expectations.
- Partner with the Central EHS Team to develop a Canada specific Field and Remote EHS program, including Minimum safety standards; Role based training requirements; Compliance monitoring and oversight mechanisms
- Development Canadian specific safety
- Collaborate with Vendor Credentialing and Central EHS teams to ensure compliance with customer access requirements and protect field employees working at customer sites.
- EHS support for Field Service/Remote associates who do not routinely report to a BD site.
Product Stewardship
- Identify new and emerging Canadian product stewardship legislation; review, interpret, and assess regulatory impact.
- Engage in regulatory advocacy through Medtech Canada and other relevant organizations.
- Liaise with central and business unit (BU) product stewardship teams and manage regulatory updates through the Documents of External Origin (DEO) process.
- Provide regulatory guidance to BU R&D and Sustaining Engineering teams on Canadian customer and regulatory requirements.
- Own accountability for all required provincial and national registrations and government notifications.
- Support responses to customer inquiries related to Canadian product stewardship compliance.
Project & Process Management
- Lead projects required to comply with Canadian regulations and laws.
- Design, implement, and sustain local processes that enhance compliance, operational efficiency, and risk reduction.
- Establish and manage EHS performance monitoring by defining key metrics, analyzing trends, tracking compliance outcomes, and providing leadership‑level visibility to inform decision‑making and continuous improvement.
Education and Experience required:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 5+ years of progressive EHS experience, including a strong understanding of Canadian federal and provincial EHS regulations and Product Stewardship requirements.
- 2+ years of experience leading EHS-related projects or programs, with demonstrated accountability for planning, execution, stakeholder management, and successful outcomes
- Demonstrated experience managing occupational health and safety compliance across multiple Canadian provinces, including Québec and its unique regulatory framework.
- Experience supporting field‑based (e.g. FSR, clinicians), customer‑site workforces (e.g. hospitals, labs, etc.), including safety risks associated with driving/fleet activities, and operating in hospital or customer‑controlled environments.
- Experience conducting risk assessments and investigations using tools such as Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), PPE assessments, ergonomic assessments, and 5-Why analysis, with the ability to develop and implement effective corrective actions aligned with the Hierarchy of Controls.
- Strongly preferred - Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP®), Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST®), Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC), or Certified Professional Product Steward (CPPS).
- Ability to travel up to 25% in Canada, or US for training, as needed.
Knowledge and Skills required:
- Sound regulatory judgment and ability to make risk‑based decisions in ambiguous situations
- Influence without authority, strong relationship building, and stakeholder management skills
- Change management and project management capabilities to successfully implement compliance programs and drive cultural change
- Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify root causes and implement effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to operate with high autonomy in ambiguous situations, exercising sound judgment and balancing regulatory rigor with business needs.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Copilot).
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in SAP and Power BI helpful. Knowledge of SAP Recycling Administration (REA) is an asset.
- Bilingual English/French a strong asset.

Salary ranges have been implemented to reward associates fairly and competitively, as well as to support recognition of associates’ progress, ranging from entry level to experts in their field, and talent mobility. There are many factors that contribute to the range displayed. The range displayed is comprised of wages, which includes base salary and commission, as well as certain components of our bonus programs. The salary offered to a successful candidate may vary based on a variety of factors including relevant experience, education, skills, qualifications, and work location.
Salary Range Information: $85000 - $135000 CADAnnual
