Job Description
The Senior Scientist I is responsible for independently planning and executing scientific investigations supporting new product development, sustaining engineering, material qualification, process development, and regulatory submissions. The role applies scientific principles in analytical chemistry, materials science, formulation development, and related disciplines to solve technical problems and enable project execution.
The Senior Scientist I serves as a technical contributor within their area of specialization and collaborates across R&D, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Product Stewardship, Manufacturing, Procurement, and external suppliers to support data-driven technical decisions and project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Scientific Leadership
- Independently design, execute, and interpret laboratory studies supporting product development, material evaluations, and process understanding.
- Develop technical rationales and recommendations based on experimental evidence, literature, supplier data, and prior knowledge.
- Lead or support root cause investigations, technical risk assessments, and problem-solving activities.
- Apply chemistry, materials science, formulation, and analytical principles to support product lifecycle management and new product development.
- Maintain technical expertise in assigned scientific disciplines and translate findings into clear project recommendations.
Analytical and Laboratory Support
- Develop, optimize, qualify, or transfer analytical methods as appropriate for project needs.
- Perform or oversee analytical testing using techniques such as HPLC, ICP, UV-Vis, FTIR, GC-MS, LC-MS, NMR, microscopy, wet chemistry, chromatography, and related laboratory methods.
- Analyze and interpret datasets using scientific and statistical approaches.
- Maintain laboratory practices consistent with safety, documentation, and quality requirements.
- Troubleshoot analytical methods, sample preparation workflows, and instrument-related issues.
Product Development Support
- Support formulation, coating, lubricant, materials, and medical device development activities.
- Evaluate material changes, supplier changes, alternate materials, and process changes through testing and scientific rationale.
- Author protocols, reports, scientific memos, test summaries, and development documentation.
- Contribute to design verification, validation, and regulatory-support activities through data generation and technical interpretation.
- Prepare samples, solutions, coatings, extraction media, and elution media as needed to support project objectives.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Product Development, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Product Stewardship, Manufacturing, Procurement, and Supply Chain stakeholders.
- Interface with suppliers and external laboratories to obtain technical information, documentation, or testing support.
- Present technical findings and recommendations to project teams and leadership.
- Contribute to technical reviews, risk assessments, project planning, and milestone execution.
- Mentor junior scientists, laboratory staff, or new team members on technical practices and documentation expectations.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve laboratory efficiency, testing workflows, documentation quality, and data integrity.
- Support knowledge management, technology transfer, and standardization of scientific practices.
- Apply lessons learned from prior projects to reduce risk, accelerate execution, and improve project clarity.
Required Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree with 6+ years of relevant experience, Master's degree with 4+ years of relevant experience, or Ph.D. with 0-2 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Disciplines
Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related scientific discipline.
Core Experience
Laboratory study execution, analytical testing, data analysis, scientific documentation, method troubleshooting, and cross-functional technical collaboration.
