The MMS BD Excellence & Business Transformation team is seeking a Director, MMS BD Excellence Innovation for BD's Medication Management Solutions (MMS) business unit.

This critical leadership role will be responsible for driving process excellence and deployment of the BD Excellence Innovation toolkit across MMS business platforms, R&D, and commercial teams. The role will partner with R&D leadership across product management and engineering teams to install and support best-in-class business system practices to improve new product development on-time delivery (OTD), reduce development time, improve product quality, and reduce costs. The role will also deliver organizational change programs, training, and hands-on coaching to drive a continuous improvement culture across business platform, R&D, commercial teams, and supporting organizations.

This role requires a credible and highly influential leader, as they will be empowered to inspire change in broad organizational practices that are critical to BD’s strategic goals, ensuring MMS builds capabilities to achieve best-in-class operational and financial performance year-over-year. This individual must have deep expertise in the concepts of lean with multiple years of experience as an operator or change practitioner in a proven lean-based business system with proven successes implementing lean processes to improve innovation performance.

Key Responsibilities

Inspire Excellence – As a champion of the BD Way and BD Excellence mindset, you will:

  • Promote a culture of excellence, continuous improvement, and customer-centricity.

  • Engage R&D and commercial leaders to align transformation objectives and drive accountability for outcomes.

  • Partner with communications associates to promote use cases, outcomes, and change stories.

Deploy toolkit – As an Innovation Excellence certified practitioner, you will:

  • Implement and support standard innovation tools and methodologies to drive excellence in innovation and development processes.

  • Lead targeted improvement initiatives aligned with MMS strategic goals.

  • Identify and address systemic challenges through rigorous, cross-functional problem-solving and kaizen events.

Scale impact – As a strategic leader and capability builder, you will:

  • Train and coach associates on the BD Excellence innovation toolkit to develop certified practitioners who can train and coach others.

  • Enhance organization learning practices to drive and sustain continuous improvement culture.

  • Benchmark internal (across BD) and external best practices to elevate performance.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in life sciences, engineering, sciences, business administration, or a related field.

  • Relevant advanced degree preferred.

Experience

  • Significant career experience in an organization where a business system is part of the culture and the core tools of visual management, problem solving, and kaizen are embedded in all aspects of the business.

  • Experience leading implementation of best-in-class Innovation tools, including Visual Project Management, Obeya, Kaizen Events, and Problem Solving.

  • 10+ years of meaningful experience in product development, business operations, management consulting, or commercial effectiveness.

  • 5+ years of experience within medical technology and device manufacturing in an R&D/Innovation role. 

  • 5+ years of experience working with teams to develop new technologies and working with diverse technology platforms.

  • 3+ years of experience directly leading and coaching teams.

  • 3+ years of experience influencing change with executive-level partners.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills with the ability to build a coalition of support with multiple stakeholders.

  • Ability to lead teams and motivate change & results in a matrix organization where collaboration across functions and regions is essential and to hold all team members responsible for outcomes.

  • Proven success in a role where the team expects you to be the expert. Demonstrated ability to establish credibility, gain followership, and drive outcomes.

  • Proven track record of learning agility, quickly orienting to new work and contributing leadership and quick achievement of change or results.

  • Ability to translate strategic direction into execution – action orientation and drive for results coupled with a true “hands on” mindset.

  • Strong systems thinking to identify and address complicated or complex organizational challenges.

  • Experience working in or across multiple divisions within an organization (commercial team, product team, scientific team, business team). 

  • Dynamic and engaging presence with the ability to motivate others and operate with strong personal integrity.

  • Change champion. Ability to drive culture and change.

  • Excellent facilitation & communication skills both in person and virtually across all levels of the organization including senior leadership.

  • Excellent project management skills and ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and deadlines.

  • True love of continuous improvement, measuring results, and problem solving.

Preferred KSAs

  • Certification in business systems and lean tools 

  • Certification as a trainer or facilitator 

  • Experience in a regulatory environment (FDA/ICH) or field within Healthcare, Life Science or Diagnostics.

  • MBA preferred.

Location

  • This is an office-based hybrid role in any of the following locations:

    • San Diego, CA (preferred)

    • Durham, NC

    • Franklin Lakes, NJ

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are required in-office days each week.

  • Travel up to 50%, with domestic and international travel.
