We are the makers of possible: Sales by Day; Jedi at Night

Harry Tomlinson is incredibly busy – and not just at work.

With two small children at home and a house that he and his wife had decided to take down and re-build, the BD Regional Sales Manager for Medication Management Solutions (MMS) supporting customers in England, Scotland, and Ireland, appears to manage it all with ease.

“Things are busy for sure and while there is no average day for me at BD, my core focus is to help my team of nine salespeople who engage with our customers daily. It’s a mix of spontaneous coaching support to help them work through specific situations, as well as ongoing and consistent sales coaching to continually elevate their skills,” Tomlinson said. “And of course, there are pipeline reviews, budget reviews, and business reviews as well.”

How to Utilize Networking for Career Progression

Tomlinson, a University of Liverpool grad with a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, began his BD career a decade ago in the now spun-off diabetes care business, embecta. It was here that he not only managed a sizeable business portfolio, but also served as a Team Leader.

It was at an internal BD networking event where Tomlinson met his future MMS leader who, 18 months later, offered him a role as a National Sales Manager for the UK 18 months. As Tomlinson continued to network and meet as many associates and leaders as possible through ARG events and business meetings, he quickly realized the significant value of those interactions.

“I joined BD based on the recommendation of someone who worked here and who spoke very positively of the company and its culture,” Tomlinson said. “The culture is focused on development. I think there is so much opportunity here. The key is in communicating your career intent and where you want to go within the company – and then working hard in your current role and connecting with as many people as you can. By showing a strong work ethic in your current role, you demonstrate to others the value and contribution you can bring and make.”

Advice for Others Considering BD for a Career?

Do it – go straight for it, is what Tomlinson would advise. “The culture is incredibly accepting here. I feel valued and heard, but also feel like I belong and am included in things. The best part of BD is everyone wants to help you and support you.”

BD is a values-driven organization that fosters a growth mindset and a “help each other be great” culture. Our people-centered commitment and caring attitude extend beyond our customers and patients. It includes our own global BD community and the societies in which we live and operate.

Kids, House, and a Hobby

When not overseeing the sales team for MMS, Tomlinson can be found either working alongside his wife as they rebuild their home or playing with his children.

“Star Wars-themed Legos are a big hobby for me. My son and I really enjoy the process of building the kits and spending time with each other. I always have wanted to be a Jedi in truth,” Tomlinson jokes.
