North Molding Lead Mold Tech - 2nd Shift

Job Description Summary

Position Summary:
Setup and operate machines in accordance with standard practices. Facilitate Mold Technicians to maintain an acceptable level of production, quality and housekeeping in accordance with good manufacturing practices in an injection molding environment. Ensure that the molding department produces high quality, low cost molded components for the assembly department, by running press within validated parameters, inspect parts radically, setting & pulling molds, diagnosing & repairing problems and implementing continuous improvements. Ensures compliance with BD quality systems, policies, procedures and best practices, and all local, state, federal and BD safety regulations, policies and procedures. Regular, punctual attendance is an essential job function. Ability to read and write and converse in English. Willing and able to uphold BD Values.

Duties/Responsibilities:     

  • Lead activities on the molding production floor and maintain a high level of communication.  Work with the molding coordinator to ensure the mold techs and mechanics work safely, maintain a high level of quality, and follow company policies and procedures.  Work with the molding coordinator to address issues

  • Assist with the set-up and maintenance of auxiliary equipment, including granulators, conveyors, liquid temperature controls

  • Make minor repairs to machines and equipment and notify proper personnel of necessary major repairs. Verify correct set-up of molds, presses and auxiliary equipment before machine start up.  Establish proper molding conditions. Obtain mold approval at the appropriate time.

  • Assist Supervisor/Unit Leader and Engineers with training programs for new employees and ensure mold tech training needs are being met.   The Lead Mold Tech should be continually working on the improved training of the mold tech group with other Lead Techs.

  • Responsible and accountable for:  Scheduling mold & press repairs/PM's and mold changeovers to meet production needs.  Ensuring adequate inventories are maintained to meet production needs.  Must communicate at a high level with mold techs, mold mechanics, mold repair, and Supervisor/Unit Leader.  Must also facilitate the mold techs to maintaining mold cavity utilization and cycle time goals, maintain adequate inventory levels to meet production needs, maintaining the expected product quality, and keeping area clean and in order. 

  • Familiar with all the department's inspection procedures and standards.  Responsible for the regular and periodic monitoring of product for acceptable quality to the most recent specification.

  • Maintain records and prepare legible reports, including SPC reports, QC inspection reports, housekeeping checklists, mold cavity data sheets, production downtime reports, cycle time sheets and problem/corrective action logs, etc. accordance with departmental standards and Quality System Standards.

  • Observe all safety and environmental procedures and Good Manufacturing Practices.

  • Work with limited supervision and maintain an atmosphere of cooperation among and between shifts, mold repair shop, quality control, and management to facilitate departmental goals.

  • Other duties as required to support the needs of the business.

Education:

  • High School diploma/GED required

Experience:          

  • General mechanical aptitude required

  • Two years’ experience in injection molding preferred (pulling, setting, starting)

  • Scientific molding technique knowledge preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of plastic materials and processes – Proficient

  • General knowledge of mold design and operation – Proficient

  • Understanding of hydraulic circuits as applied to injection molding machines – Basic

  • Molding auxiliary equipment - Basic

  • Mechanical ability - Proficient

  • Troubleshooting and problem solving efficiently and effectively – Proficient

  • Ability to keep and maintain detailed documentation/communication - Proficient
