Jordan Thompson
We are the supporters of possible: Medical Assistant. Phlebotomist. Senior Quality Specialist.
Jordan Thompson believes that she can do anything she puts her mind to.
Born and raised in Ghana, West Africa, the Senior Quality Specialist has been with BD a little under two years and began her time with the company as a contingent associate supporting Integrated Diagnostic Solutions. She was hired full-time about a year ago and half ago with responsibility for the BD BACTECTM instrumentation, and recently shifted over to supporting the Specimen Management business – another med tech solution about which she is enjoying learning.
“I started my career as a pediatrics medical assistant in a private practice and did that for four years. Then I became a phlebotomist for one of Baltimore’s biggest hospitals for five years. Obviously, I was surrounded by and used BD syringes and tubes for my work, which got me thinking about who BD was and what other products did they make to help patients?” explained Jordan. “I started doing research and I was amazed to find just how many devices BD develops and manufactures. The one thing I’ve always believed is that I can do anything if I focus on it and I’m always ready to do what it takes to train for it.”
She holds a bachelor’s degree in health information management from the University of Arizona and plans to pursue a master’s degree in the future.
Flags, Culture, and Belonging
A big aspect of her appreciation for BD as a workplace is the diversity of the teams and an environment that encourages diversity, and a strong emphasis on culture.
“I remember my first day at the Sparks location, the first thing I saw as soon as I entered the building were the beautiful flags representing dozens of countries in the building,” noted Jordan. “They mean unity to me. BD is not just for one nation or country, but for all countries and people all around the world – the flags mean we are in this together and that’s powerful for me. BD truly embraces diversity and inclusiveness and I feel like I belong at this company because BD gives me a sense of belongingness.”
Middle Sister and Mom of Three
Jordan did not lack company growing up. She has five sisters and is the middle child in the family. She jokes: “As the middle child, you don’t get as much attention as the first or the last but that’s ok. It was fun growing up with so many sisters.”
Jordan and her husband have three children and spend as much time with them as they can while they are young and in their pre-teen years. “I love the hybrid workplace model that BD offers me, with three days in the office and the other two working from home. It helps so much when you are working full-time and have children, so I appreciate the flexibility for sure.”
