We are the makers of possible: Oncology Sales Leader Embraces Servant Leadership
For Luigi Ferro, two passions merge nicely when it comes to his role at BD: helping diagnose breast cancer and being a good servant leader to his team of five people comprised of sales reps, an area manager, and a clinical specialist.
Luigi launched his career with BD in 2015 as a sales representative for the former Diabetes Care business, which was spun off in 2022 and is now called embecta. Since March 2021, he has been responsible for all Oncology-BD Interventional (BDI) sales in Italy, including the BD EleVationTM, EnCor EnspireTM, and EnCor UltraTM Breast Biopsy Systems.
“Helping deliver devices to assist in diagnosing breast cancer is a very important focus in the healthcare system here,” explained Luigi. “I feel very proud to work for a company that is focused on this particular disease and products that assist in its diagnosis.”
Leading, Caring, Engaging
In addition to drawing energy from his sales work at BD, Luigi finds that managing others is motivating and inspiring for him as well.
“BD demands a lot from its people, but in return, we treat our associates very well. I am very motivated by many of our top leaders, and I am focused on how to instill that same level of inspiration and motivation in those whom I manage as well,” said Luigi. “The company truly empowers and trusts us to do the right thing, and always work together as One BD. I’m very committed to helping my team grow, learn, and thrive.”
Any advice on what it’s like working at BD?
When asked what advice he would give someone about BD, Luigi offered his perspective: “I think you have to consider very deeply what you want from an organization. This organization has a great network of colleagues and peers who are always willing to help you. Everyone has an incredible opportunity to help transform the industry from our work at BD. The care, level of empowerment, and sheer network this company offers is not likely something you will find elsewhere.”
As for hiring external talent, Luigi said that good jobs are difficult to find for less tenured talent candidates in Europe overall. He encourages other People Managers like himself to consider candidates who demonstrate not just technical skills to perform a role at BD, but also the level of drive, ambition, and eagerness to work for BD -- not just any company.
“Experience and skills are important, but it’s good to consider someone who is passionate right from the start about working at BD – not just any company. We are a special organization, and our people are a large differentiator for us,” concluded Luigi.
