We are the engineers of possible: Making a Difference in the RCI
A beautiful country with stunning coastlines. A leader in MedTech where you can make a significant impact on helping advance the world of healthTM.
These are two of the compelling reasons Prathamesh Dhanpalwar, R&D Engineering Manager and a Team lead at the BD Research Center in Ireland (RCI), enjoys his role with the organization.
“I’ve been in Ireland for nine years now and came from Hyderabad, India,” noted Prathamesh. “Ireland is home to many of the world’s best-known tech companies and being with BD, I know that I am helping to make a difference not just in supporting healthcare professionals, but the end patient, too, which is very powerful.”
BD has a Culture like No Other
According to Prathamesh, everyone at BD is very friendly and always open to help, something culturally that he has experienced from his first day with RCI. He said the RCI site has grown a lot in the last five years and that is one of the reasons why one can easily become part of it as it is in the process of building its own culture. “Everyone is so passionate about what they do and bring in tons of knowledge and experience. Moreover, as RCI is a Center of Excellence for BD, one can be exposed to a lot of products, the technology used, and experiences gained by working across various business units and product portfolios.”
Day-in-the-Life of R&D Engineering Manager
As an R&D Engineering Manager for the former IDS business line, Prathamesh had both technical and functional management responsibilities for new product solutions development, as well as sustaining current products and solutions for diagnostic solutions. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, a master’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in biomedical engineering.
“My typical day started with a stand-up where we briefly met our team to share with each other the work that each one was planning for that day/week and any help needed for progressing with their respective tasks. The rest of the day was typically filled with other project-based meetings such as planning meetings, design reviews, brainstorming, etc. and also with 1-1s with my direct reports, project and/or Functional Manager,” he said.
With every new or current product, he and the team apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts to make high quality and reliable devices that help drive strategy and business objectives.
Shifting into a New Role
Currently, Prathamesh is transitioning from his role of technical lead and functional manager in the former IDS business unit, where he and his team were working on the product portfolio that automates conventional microbiological lab workflows to help prepare laboratories to meet changing demands and achieve efficient, timely and cost-effective clinical bacteriological testing, to assuming the role of R&D Lead in Ireland in UCC business unit, where he will be working on a New Product Development project.
Prathamesh is resolute that by working at BD, any individual can make a difference. “At BD, our efforts, customer centricity, and expertise contributes to something very special as all of us work toward achieving our Purpose; to help save and improve lives, while helping to ensure patient safety. BD is a special company.”
