About the Position

This position is part of the Advanced Patient Monitoring (APM) business unit within BD's medical segment, aligning with BD's smart connected care approach. Role Impact

As a Human Factors Engineer, you will apply user-centered design principles to medical device development, ensuring products are safe, effective, and intuitive for healthcare professionals and patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of device users and environments to design and develop new products and product changes
  • Engage with business unit and project team leadership to support human factors activities throughout product development
  • Partner multi-functionally with clinical, quality, regulatory, marketing, and R&D teams
  • Plan and implement usability research and evaluations
  • Perform analytical usability assessments of devices and systems
  • Document usability evaluation results and build work you're doing (plans, protocols, reports, etc.).
  • Identify usability improvement opportunities through user engagement and feedback collection
  • Provide creative solutions to complex usability challenges
  • Know the latest with human factors regulations, expectations, and standard methodologies
  • Lead internal human factors and usability training courses
  • Travel domestically and internationally (up to 5%)

Required Qualifications

  • Education & Experience (one of the following):
    • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in human factors, mechanical, biomedical, or related engineering subject area AND 4+ years of human factors experience
    • OR
    • Master's Degree or equivalent experience in human factors, mechanical, biomedical, or related engineering field OR a minimum of 3 years of human factors experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience & Expertise:
    • UI/UX design experience (strongly preferred)
    • Degree or equivalent experience in human factors engineering, usability engineering, or related field (highly desired)
    • Experience in medical device or other highly regulated industries (strongly preferred)
    • Experience planning and driving human factors studies using various methodologies:
      • Ethnographic research
      • Contextual inquiry
      • Cognitive walk-through
      • Heuristic analysis
      • Task analysis
      • Simulated use studies
      • Summative testing
    • Clinical experience with medical monitoring devices or software-based medical systems
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on technical inputs from multiple sources
    • Collaborative and flexible approach to solving user interface challenges
    • Effective communication, listening, and diagnostic skills for interfacing with healthcare professionals and cross-functional teams
    • Ability to clearly communicate how study results can be implemented into design
    • Proactive and creative problem-solving skills
    • Strong documentation and organizational skills
    • Self-motivated with ability to work independently and collaboratively
    • Demonstrated ability to present to and interact with senior leadership
