Travis Stucky, Senior Clinical Learning and Performance Consultant at BD

Travis Stucky

Sr. Clinical Learning and Performance Consultant
San Diego

We are the supporters of possible: Pharmacist turned Clinical Educator

Travis Stucky is currently working in a role that, candidly, he previously did not know existed – but it is one that he loves.

As a Senior Clinical Learning and Performance Consultant, he educates BD associates about BD Healthsight SolutionsTM and how they function and interact with other BD products. He has been with BD for close to one year after serving as a pharmacist across various care settings for much of his career.

The BD HealthSight Platform integrates the company’s core BD Alaris™ and BD Pyxis™ anchor products with the customer's Electronic Medical Record (EMR), enabling an interconnected, enterprise-wide medication management solution.

From supporting the local community to a hospital setting

Travis graduated from the University of Iowa with a doctorate in pharmacy (PharmD) in 2005 and after years of working in the community setting, found himself back at his alma mater as a clinical pharmacist at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

“I really enjoyed the career move to Stead because it exposed me to a completely different side of pharmacy and supporting patients, which was valuable. I was able to help provide pharmacy care for admitted and clinic-visit patients, as well as be a part of the team that would help transition care for discharge. This allowed me to experience the many complexities involved in hospital pharmacy, especially in the pediatric setting. Even something like compounding medicine,” explained Travis.

He continues: “I went from maybe making simple oral suspensions to supervising the preparation of sterile compounds for injection. I even had the opportunity to act as Editor for the hospital’s BD AlarisTM Guardrails software, which defined the infusion parameters for our neonatal and pediatric patients. All these experiences opened my eyes to the challenges that are faced daily by staff and patients, and how vital technology is to help ensure safety and increase efficiency.”

Sharing knowledge and insights from his past profession

One of the things Travis appreciates the most about his role with BD is that he gets to use his knowledge and experience to help others at BD learn about our products and solutions – not just how they work, but also the value they bring to patients and members of the healthcare community.

“I want others to get a sense of what life is like in environments where I have worked previously and how BD really is making a difference. With a better understanding, we are more empowered to relate to our customers and help them get the most out of our products. We get to take advantage of our in-person classroom in San Diego, where those attending get to mimic actual workflows on things like BD PyxisTM Medstations and PyxisTM Logistics. This helps give tactile understanding of how data gets created for our various HealthSight products, like Inventory Optimization and Diversion, for example,” said Travis.

Why BD?

The pharmacist turned clinical product trainer joined BD in the summer 2023 and was drawn to the company due to its reputation as the “gold standard” in medical technology products and solutions.

“BD is so embedded in patient care that we are nearly everywhere. You cannot be in the healthcare space and not know who BD is. We are known for high-quality med tech solutions and bring a lot of value to patient care across the globe. From BD branded products behind-the-counter and over-the-counter in my community days, to the machines, syringes, and infusion sets in my hospital days, I’ve always been surrounded by BD products and their reputation for quality,” noted Travis.

Strong sense of culture

“I think a lot of companies talk about how they value employees and want feedback to improve the workplace, but I believe BD lives by example here. Leadership is committed to listening and helping do everything they can to overcome challenges we may face, which is refreshing. I receive an abundance of support and guidance, as well as encouragement to grow within my role or beyond,” noted Travis. “This is a career path I never knew existed when I was in pharmacy school but I’m so happy that I get to do it.”

In his personal time, Travis and his partner, Krista, can be found outdoors in and around San Diego, where they live and work. “There are tons of beaches. We love to hike, especially with our dogs. We love to go to restaurants and enjoy good food. I also cook and bake at home a lot, and even have a sourdough starter that just turned six months! I’ve recently taken up learning the electric guitar which I’ve really enjoyed,” concluded Travis.
